Role Overview and Responsibilities

The Quantity Surveyor will support and collaborate with the commercial and construction teams to drive successful project outcomes, maintain strong relationships, optimize commercial returns, and manage project risks.

• Prepare tender submissions, evaluate and select subcontractors, and negotiate and finalize subcontract agreements.
• Oversee financial and commercial matters of subcontractors through to the completion of final accounts.
• Maintain site documentation and records, including measurement data.
• Support forecasting, target setting, and contract value reconciliation activities.
• Prepare valuations and variations with detailed records, settling changes as work progresses.
• Update projections for final accounts and submit them promptly.
• Collaborate with site management to address and challenge commercial issues.
• Implement the commercial strategy effectively to protect contractual entitlements.
• Participate in contract value reviews, ensuring an independent perspective.
• Identify and evaluate associated risks and opportunities.
• Gain knowledge on insurance policies and warranties.
• Engage in cash flow management to ensure financial health.
• Support tendering processes as needed.
• Supervise Assistant and Trainee Quantity Surveyors, reviewing their outputs.
• Apply strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Use relevant technology platforms efficiently.
• Possess a thorough understanding of the Standard Method of Measurement.
• Demonstrate sound commercial awareness and take ownership of responsibilities.
• Exhibit effective time management, organizational, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• A degree-level education and progress towards professional accreditation.
• Familiarity with JCT contracts.
• Proficiency in letter and report writing.
• Negotiation expertise.
• Experience conducting contract value reviews (CVRs).
• Completion of a 2-day safety appreciation course covering contract and commercial awareness.
• Membership or eligibility for the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Desirable Attributes and Experience

• Experience working on large Design and Build contracts.
• Understanding of claims and dispute resolution mechanisms.
• Basic knowledge of contract law.
• Participated in contracts valued above €/£15 million without full responsibility.
• Managed traditional contract controls.
• Oversaw Assistant Quantity Surveyors and validated Standard Method of Measurement topics.
