Principal / Lead Geotechnical Engineer

Overview

We are looking for a highly skilled and visionary Principal / Lead Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team in Dublin. This senior position suits a technically proficient and people-oriented professional who excels in delivering superior geotechnical solutions in complex, multidisciplinary settings. The successful applicant will play a critical role in projects primarily within the Pharmaceutical and Data Centre sectors, providing expertise from early geotechnical planning through to detailed design and construction phases.

This role allows you to lead key geotechnical aspects of major industrial projects while enhancing your technical expertise, project management, and leadership skills. You will also be instrumental in coaching and mentoring team members, encouraging a collaborative and innovative engineering culture.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead geotechnical contributions across a diverse project portfolio, including site investigation, foundation engineering, earthworks, ground improvement, retaining walls, settlement evaluation, and risk management.
• Provide authoritative technical leadership by reviewing and overseeing geotechnical analyses and design to assure sound engineering outcomes.
• Support geotechnical design efforts during all project phases such as due diligence, permitting, detailed design, and construction support.
• Work closely with Civil and Structural Engineering teams to integrate geotechnical solutions seamlessly into overall project delivery.
• Offer expert construction-phase guidance, resolving ground-related issues promptly, and providing contractors with practical and build-friendly solutions.
• Promote safety, quality assurance, and environmental best practices, ensuring adherence to the highest technical standards.
• Prepare thorough, clear, and technically rigorous reports, assessments, and documentation.
• Mentor and manage design staff to foster professional growth, skill advancement, and technical excellence.
• Develop strong partnerships with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure common project goals.
• Adapt quickly to changing ground conditions, project modifications, and site challenges.
• Utilize advanced geotechnical software tools for slope stability, settlement modelling, foundation design, and soil-structure interaction analysis.
• Meet strict deadlines without compromising technical quality.
• Apply comprehensive knowledge of Eurocode 7, other relevant international standards, and industry best practices.
• Provide geotechnical engineering support for projects across Ireland and Europe, adapting to diverse geological and regulatory contexts.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a similar field.
• Chartered engineer status with Engineers Ireland or equivalent accreditation.
• At least 15 years of post-graduate experience in engineering or geotechnical consultancy roles.
• Extensive knowledge in geology, ground investigation planning, geotechnical data interpretation, earthworks, and related engineering fundamentals.
• Proven track record managing geotechnical design for large industrial developments; experience in Pharmaceutical, Semiconductor, Food, Energy, or Data Centre projects is highly valued.
• Comprehensive understanding of ground investigation processes including scoping, supervision, interpretation, and model development.
• Strong analytical abilities with expertise in advanced geotechnical design and numerical simulation techniques.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills, capable of directing multidisciplinary teams and engaging stakeholders effectively.
