About the Role

As Principal Cloud Data Engineer reporting to the Head of ICT Architecture, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing enterprise data platform strategies. Your leadership will guide complex projects across platform and data product teams, advancing cloud-native solutions that are secure, scalable, and tailored to business needs. You will offer strategic technical counsel to senior stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the long-term organizational data strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and influence enterprise data platform and product teams with strategic and hands-on technical direction.
  • Construct and enhance scalable, secure data pipelines for both batch processing and real-time streaming in the cloud.
  • Develop and manage reusable data products leveraging Azure Databricks to meet fit-for-purpose requirements.
  • Define, maintain, and improve engineering standards, data governance protocols, and DevOps methodologies.
  • Advise senior ICT leadership on architecture, risk mitigation, and overall technical strategy.
  • Mentor and elevate engineers and analysts to build squad capabilities.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum five years of senior experience in cloud data engineering, architectural design, or platform delivery roles.
  • Proficient with Azure Databricks, Python programming, Delta Lake, Apache Spark, and Azure Data Services.
  • Experienced in designing cloud-based data pipelines and implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and DevOps pipelines using tools such as Terraform, Bicep, and Azure DevOps.
  • Strong knowledge of data modeling, metadata management, and governance solutions like Unity Catalog.
  • Committed to adhering to public sector standards, strict data governance principles, and national security frameworks.

Additional Information

  • This is a Wellington, New Zealand based role.
  • Position is fixed term until June 2027 with possibility of extension as part of a multi-year program.
