TiakiTech is a health technology startup located in Auckland, New Zealand, specializing in advanced artificial intelligence innovations for healthcare applications. This role offers an excellent chance for a recent PhD graduate to apply their research expertise within an early-stage tech environment, tackling real-world AI problems directly relevant to clinical settings. You will be part of a compact, driven R&D team with the opportunity to significantly influence both the technical roadmap and upcoming products.
Role Overview
As a Machine Learning Engineer, your responsibilities will include applied AI research, algorithm development, and technical validation, facilitating the transformation of cutting-edge methods into practical healthcare solutions. Key duties encompass:
- Enhancing machine learning algorithms and developing research prototypes
- Handling biomedical, physiological, and other complex datasets
- Designing experiments and assessing model performance, robustness, and reliability
- Supporting GPU, high-performance computing, and cloud-based research operations
- Collaborating extensively with engineers, researchers, and clinical partners
- Providing support for hospital-centered research and partnership activities as required
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A PhD completed or having submitted their thesis for examination by December 2026 in fields such as Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Signal Processing, or related areas
- An in-depth understanding of machine learning, statistics, and algorithm creation
- Advanced proficiency with Python programming and contemporary ML frameworks (including PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn)
- Experience working with GPU training and/or high-performance computing environments
- Strong grasp of model evaluation techniques, validation, and experimental design
- Capability to manage complex or large datasets
- Familiarity with scientific software development tools and workflows (Linux, Git, Jupyter, environment management)
- Willingness to work on-site in Auckland with occasional travel to hospital collaborators
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience with biomedical signal processing or complex time-series data such as ECG, EEG, PPG, and wearable sensor data
- Knowledge of cloud-based ML infrastructure and scalable computing platforms (AWS, EC2 GPU, S3, Docker, etc.)
- Awareness of emerging AI areas such as large language models, AI agents, and foundational AI models
- Exposure to clinical research, healthcare environments, or regulated technology sectors
Employment Terms
This position is a full-time, fixed-term contract lasting six months focused on an R&D programme. Based in Auckland, it requires on-site presence. There is potential for conversion to a permanent role depending on business needs, funding, and mutual agreement.

Doctorate
