Join Thomson Reuters Labs, the AI Research & Development division of Thomson Reuters, dedicated to advancing applied research within an industry context. We focus on pioneering solutions that serve Legal, Tax & Accounting, Risk, and News Media sectors by leveraging the latest in AI and machine learning technologies. Our approach involves thorough experimentation, development, and deployment of cutting-edge innovations aimed squarely at addressing client challenges.

Role Summary

As a Lead Applied Scientist, you will shape research directions and spearhead impactful projects influencing Thomson Reuters’ AI and machine learning strategies across diverse product lines. Your expertise will drive innovation in areas like legal reasoning, document comprehension, and knowledge graph methodologies. Responsibilities include setting technical visions, mentoring fellow scientists, and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to align AI solutions with customer needs and data insights.

Candidate Profile

  • Possess a PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Bring at least seven years of practical involvement in developing production-level information retrieval, natural language processing, machine learning, or generative AI systems using advanced techniques.
  • Proven leadership skills managing cross-functional teams to deliver comprehensive AI capabilities.
  • A strong product orientation, capable of translating complex user issues into effective AI applications.
  • Track record of pioneering novel methodologies that shape product roadmaps and drive business results.
  • Exceptional communication and analytical proficiencies.
  • In-depth knowledge of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures, agentic systems, tool-using frameworks, and evaluation techniques.
  • Expertise in crafting innovative solutions for specialized professional fields such as medical, tax, or legal domains.
  • Authorship of research published at premier academic conferences (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, KDD).
  • Experience in delivering production-level code adhering to rigorous software engineering and machine learning operations (MLOps) practices.

Compensation

Salary varies by location. For Ontario, Canada, the salary range for this role is CAD 140,000 to 175,000 annually. This range is influenced by experience, skills, and internal equity considerations. Eligible candidates may also qualify for annual bonuses based on performance.
