Job description
About Dyson and the Role
Dyson develops the Dyson Link Smart Home app, a leading IoT platform integrated with over 3 million Dyson devices worldwide and used actively by more than 1 million users. The app enjoys high ratings of 4.5 stars on the App Store and 4.3 stars on Google Play. The company aims to expand this platform as it connects more devices across various categories, posing significant technical challenges.
We are seeking a Lead Android Engineer to join our mobile development team. This senior individual contributor role demands deep technical expertise, strong ownership, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate will help shape the Android platform's architecture and technical trajectory while driving engineering excellence and leading complex initiatives.
Technical Environment and Technology Stack
Our Android application is architected modularly, primarily following the MVVM design pattern. The majority of the codebase is written in Kotlin, with ongoing migration from Java. We utilize modern Jetpack libraries such as Navigation Component for UI flow management and WorkManager for background processing.
For networking and APIs, the app employs Retrofit, AWS IoT SDK, and Gson, with Dagger used for dependency injection. Kotlin coroutines are extensively used to handle asynchronous operations and event streams.
Our testing framework includes JUnit and Mockito for unit tests and Espresso with Kakao for UI testing. We continually assess new tools and frameworks to enhance productivity and maintain code quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and own complex technical projects throughout the Android platform life cycle, from conception through delivery.
- Define and refine the application architecture to ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability under significant load.
- Develop high-quality, robust, and well-tested code, exemplifying engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product management, design, QA, cloud, and embedded systems engineering to build cohesive user experiences.
- Guide technical decision-making and establish standards within the mobile team through design reviews, Request for Comments (RFCs), and best practice sharing.
- Identify systemic technical issues, enhancing app stability, performance, and the developer experience.
- Mentor fellow engineers by conducting code reviews, pair programming, and facilitating knowledge exchange.
- Evaluate and implement new tools, frameworks, and methodologies to improve engineering productivity.
- Contribute to strategic planning by offering technical insights, cost-benefit trade-offs, and timelines for roadmap items.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrates passion for leveraging technology to enhance everyday living environments.
- Strong leadership skills with a history of success in collaborative agile teams.
- Presents over 8 years of experience in architecting and delivering Android applications that serve actual users.
- Comprehensive expertise in Kotlin and contemporary Android architectural patterns, including scalable system design.
- Proficient in asynchronous programming and concurrency frameworks such as coroutines and flows.
- Experienced in driving software quality through testing frameworks, automation strategies, and continuous integration.
- Experience managing large features or subsystems from inception to production deployment.
- Adept at guiding technical decisions and influencing a diverse range of stakeholders across multiple teams.
- Committed to mentoring others and raising the overall technical standard within the engineering team.
- Balances practical development needs with technical excellence, knowing when to optimize versus when to deliver.
- Familiar with AI-assisted developer tools like GitHub Copilot or Claude and exercises engineering judgment when integrating their outputs.
