About the Role
Central Otago District Council seeks a motivated and proficient Intermediate Planning Officer to join their Planning team based in Alexandra, Otago, New Zealand. This permanent full-time position involves working on a variety of urban, rural, subdivision, and development projects across one of New Zealand's unique regions. The role requires contributing to quality planning outcomes within a supportive and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and evaluate a diverse range of resource consent applications.
- Provide expert planning advice to applicants, consultants, internal teams, and local community members.
- Handle matters related to urban and rural land use and subdivision developments.
- Assess impacts on heritage buildings and precincts.
- Support industrial, commercial, and residential growth initiatives.
- Address planning issues involving significant and outstanding natural landscapes.
- Draft clear, well-structured planning reports, recommendations, and correspondence.
- Participate in hearings, pre-application meetings, and cooperate with internal teams as necessary.
- Manage workload independently while maintaining sound judgment and contributing positively to a customer-oriented team culture.
Candidate Profile and Required Skills
- Possess a tertiary qualification in Planning, Resource Management, or a related discipline.
- Have proven experience in resource management planning, preferably within local government or similar regulatory bodies.
- Demonstrate solid knowledge of the Resource Management Act, district plans, and resource consent procedures.
- Ability to evaluate environmental effects, interpret planning regulations, and prepare comprehensive reports.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with confidence in engaging diverse stakeholders.
- Proficient in computer use, including planning and document management systems.
- Exceptional time management skills, capable of handling competing priorities and meeting statutory deadlines.
- Adopt a solutions-oriented approach with sound decision-making and a team-focused mindset.
- Membership or eligibility for membership of the New Zealand Planning Institute is advantageous.
