About the Role

Pattle Delamore Partners (PDP) is a prominent environmental and engineering consultancy operating across New Zealand with over 40 years of experience. We collaborate with clients, iwi, and communities to address complex air, land, and water challenges, offering practical, sustainable solutions.

We are expanding our team due to growing projects and invite a driven and capable Ecologist to join our Auckland office. This position belongs to the Water Resources group and involves applying expertise in terrestrial and freshwater ecology investigations. The focus is mainly on terrestrial ecology, covering botany and wetland studies, with additional aquatic ecology and water quality tasks as required. The role works closely with an interdisciplinary team, including groundwater, water and air quality scientists, geohydrologists, environmental and geotechnical engineers, contaminated land specialists, and planners, providing strong support for professional growth and successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform desktop ecological assessments utilizing geospatial tools to evaluate ecological features and constraints.
• Conduct wetland delineation and vegetation surveys in the field.
• Undertake fieldwork to assess terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems including flora, fauna, habitats, and ecological significance.
• Prepare detailed technical reports including ecological effects assessments and implement the mitigation hierarchy to manage potential impacts.
• Develop ecological management and monitoring plans, such as riparian and terrestrial planting and restoration plans.
• Analyze ecological data with spreadsheet and statistical software like R.
• Interpret data by referencing published environmental standards and guidelines to determine environmental consequences.
• Adhere to company policies concerning health and safety, quality assurance, administration, and technical standards.

Candidate Profile

• Holds an Honours or Masters degree in ecology or equivalent environmental science qualification.
• Possesses between two to four years of professional experience, preferably within environmental consulting or local government in New Zealand.
• Demonstrates strong expertise in botany and plant ecology.
• Has foundational knowledge of freshwater ecology and terrestrial fauna.
• Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce comprehensive technical reports.
• Familiar with Ministry for the Environment Wetland Delineation protocols (2020) and vegetation survey methodologies.
• Understands relevant environmental legislation, including national policy statements and standards related to freshwater and indigenous biodiversity.
• Shows strong organizational skills and capability to manage own workload effectively.
• Self-motivated with curiosity, initiative, and genuine interest in PDP's mission.
• Possesses problem-solving aptitude and a solutions-oriented mindset.
• Willing and able to travel nationally for fieldwork including multi-site and overnight stays.
• Holds a valid, clean driver’s licence.
