Job description

Overview

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing various infrastructure elements including roads, streets, curbs, surface mats, membranes, drainage systems, and other improved areas by utilizing appropriate paving and surfacing methods. It requires interpreting construction plans and surveys by considering subgrade contours and grade alignment and providing erosion control measures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fulfill heavy equipment operational requirements specified by a government contract on a military base.
  • Select and use appropriate construction equipment for maintenance and repair tasks, operating them for grading, leveling, sloping, and compacting construction materials.
  • Assess proposed work sites to identify necessary resources, plan and estimate tasks, coordinate with civil engineering and base agencies, and inspect work to ensure compliance with quality standards and regulations.
  • Maintain and repair graded and graveled roads, open ditches, drainage systems, foundations, and slabs.
  • Experience with chain link fence construction and repairs is essential.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent heavy equipment operation experience in military or commercial settings.
  • Experience either operating or supervising construction equipment for site preparation involving asphalt roads, grounds maintenance, concrete work, soil stabilization, and pavement construction/repair.
  • Possession of at least one certification or qualification such as OSHA Certified Crane Operator, minimum two years on a 100-ton crane, or certifications for Forklift, Front-End Loader, CTL Skid Steer, Excavator, Street Sweeper operation, or chain link fence expertise.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, safety instructions, and regulations.
  • Driver's license required; CDL Class A or B preferred.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. citizenship mandatory).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The job involves frequent standing, walking, hand usage, and talking or hearing. Tasks require reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, often under tiring and uncomfortable conditions. Occasionally, climbing, balancing, or sitting is necessary. Heavy lifting—often between 40-50 pounds and occasionally more—is routine. Exposure to moving machinery, heat, vibration, wet/humid conditions, heights, airborne particles, varying weather extremes, and electrical hazards is common. Noise levels are generally loud, and safety concerns require constant vigilance, including providing feedback to supervisors about hazards. Work conditions may be remote and uncomfortable with extended hours in challenging environments.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Safety: Commitment to maintaining a safe workplace culture through training, participation in emergency responses, buddy aid, and safety committees.
  • Quality: Adherence to quality standards that meet customer expectations and compliance with company and contract quality management requirements.
  • Procedure Compliance: Understanding and implementation of operational, safety, quality, and environmental policies and procedures relevant to the role.
