Position Overview

This role involves grading various grains such as wheat, oil seeds, and pulses. The Grain Grader Level 3 provides technical leadership and training to inspectors, liaises directly with grain elevators regarding grading matters, and performs laboratory analyses adhering to the Canadian Grain Commission guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute all duties expected from Grain Inspector Level 1 and Grader Level 2 positions.
• For Grain Inspector Level 1: Manage incoming sample logistics including logging, organizing, storing, distributing, and disposing post-inspection;
• Prepare grain samples using carter dockage testers and maintain cleanliness;
• Operate, calibrate, and upkeep laboratory tools such as moisture meters, protein testers, scales, ELISA readers, ensuring equipment meets standards prior to testing;
• Conduct analyses including moisture, protein content, dockage, test weight, mycotoxins, germination, gluten, falling number tests, among others;
• Perform branch-specific laboratory analyses like malt barley variety identification and audits;
• Manage laboratory inventory for consumables like gloves, dust masks, and filter papers;
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in work areas;
• Comply strictly with the Canada Grain Act, Canada Grain regulations, CFIA protocols, CGC sampling standards, SGS SOPs, and client-specific requirements;
• Issue initial and final grading reports for various inspections including Government Inspection Services and container inspections;
• Assist with creating on-site final analysis and inspection reports.

• For Grain Grader Level 2: Grade and inspect all grain types arriving at the lab or through on-site inspections;
• Handle off-site grading, sampling responsibilities, and special projects;
• Collaborate with supervisors and senior staff to address daily production challenges and provide technical guidance to junior graders;
• Analyze testing data, document inspection and grading outcomes, and communicate results to grain elevators;
• Conduct comprehensive grain inventory audits covering weight and grade;
• Offer leadership and mentorship to team members including peers and indirect reports.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required;
• At least five years’ experience at Grain Grader Level 2;
• Prior exposure to preliminary grain inspections and grading is advantageous.
