The Opportunity

Due to a robust queue of upcoming projects, Beca's Environmental Advisory team is seeking an early-career Environmental Scientist with 2 to 4 years of relevant experience. Based in Auckland or Wellington, this position offers a chance to apply your enthusiasm for environmental issues along with your technical expertise to tackle real-world client challenges. The role focuses primarily on water quality within wastewater management for major infrastructure clients and New Zealand's new water service entity operators. Additionally, you may assist broader environmental teams, gaining experience in tasks like water quality assessments, wetland and lizard surveys, and working alongside the contaminated land team for soil test pitting.

Key Responsibilities

• Conducting both collaborative and independent fieldwork across various locations nationwide.
• Monitoring environmental aspects during construction phases, including soil and water sampling.
• Performing site-based and desktop analyses to produce technical reports supporting projects such as options assessments, resource consent applications, and compliance monitoring.
• Building and nurturing strong relationships with both internal colleagues and external clients.

As a member of Beca's national Environmental Advisory group, you'll work alongside ecologists, water and air quality scientists, environmental specialists, and colleagues in complementary disciplines like sustainability, planning, and engineering—all committed to delivering outstanding environmental outcomes.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Proficient in water quality matters, including familiarity with New Zealand's water quality laws and planning frameworks.
• Strong communication capabilities, both written and spoken.
• Degree in environmental science, chemistry, environmental engineering, or a related field.

Desirable Skills

• Experience conducting freshwater ecology assessments concurrent with water quality evaluations.
• Background in environmental management, compliance, and monitoring practices, including sediment and erosion control.
• Experience in collecting environmental samples such as soil, groundwater, surface water, macroinvertebrates, sediment, and asbestos using methods like hand auger, test pitting, and drilling.
• Competence in data analysis using tools like ESdat and geographic information systems (GIS).
• Participation in preliminary and detailed site investigations.
