Job Overview

The Environmental Officer position at Dangote Industries Limited is responsible for overseeing the environmental compliance of operations across plant and mining activities. The role ensures alignment with company policies, industry standards, and international guidelines while promoting sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the environmental regulatory compliance related to both plant and mining operations.
• Coordinate environmental management activities ensuring adherence to company policies and environmental standards.
• Implement and monitor effectiveness of environmental programs, trainings, procedures, and controls to drive continuous improvement.
• Liaise with relevant external agencies on environmental compliance matters.
• Support the HSE Manager by identifying risks and environmental hazards, contributing to risk mitigation strategies.
• Develop environmental plans proposing enhancements to existing infrastructures and business processes.
• Participate in incident investigations, preparing comprehensive reports with recommendations for management.
• Execute environmental corrective actions approved to prevent recurrence of incidents.
• Maintain accurate records involving environmental data collection and analysis.
• Conduct periodic plant inspections to assist with environmental compliance monitoring.
• Create and deliver environmental information and training programs.
• Engage in HSE meetings and provide necessary training sessions.
• Oversee contractors’ activities ensuring compliance with environmental performance standards.
• Monitor air emissions across plant sections for regulatory compliance related to air quality.
• Conduct water and wastewater testing to ensure compliance with standards.
• Ensure proper waste management protocols and maintain plant housekeeping standards.
• Implement dust suppression measures within mining areas.
• Supervise the implementation of the Mines Closure Plan.
• Ensure application of mitigation strategies as outlined in Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Environmental Audits (EA).
• Produce detailed environmental reports for management review.
• Prepare annual environmental monitoring and compliance documentation.
• Perform other HSE-related duties as assigned by the HSE Manager.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or an equivalent field, complemented by relevant professional environmental qualifications.
• A minimum of five years’ experience in environmental management functions.
• Certification or license from a recognized HSE authority such as NEMC; certification as an Environmental Expert is advantageous.
• Familiarity with ISO 14001:2015 standards is preferred.
• Experience or knowledge of the cement manufacturing industry is considered beneficial.
