About OpenTable
OpenTable, a part of Booking Holdings, Inc., connects millions of diners with over 70,000 restaurant partners globally. With more than 25 years of experience, we empower restaurants through advanced technology to enhance their operational focus and guest experience, enabling seamless restaurant discovery and booking.
Role Overview
We seek an Engineering Manager based in Toronto, working onsite two days per week, to lead a crucial team managing OpenTable's partner ecosystem. This role involves creating and sustaining high-scale APIs that integrate OpenTable's core services with external platforms.
Responsibilities
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing, inclusive engineering team, fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and clear expectations. Deliver constructive feedback and manage performance to support growth of senior and staff engineers.
- Set technical direction for partner APIs, driving architecture decisions focused on performance, consistency, and developer experience. Establish strong security and auditing standards for external access.
- Architect resilient systems that isolate failures, ensuring fault tolerance so partner system issues do not affect OpenTable's core platform stability and accuracy.
- Coordinate complex dependencies with external partners like Google and Amazon, translating partner and product needs into actionable engineering priorities to deliver impactful integrations.
- Own lifecycle management of platforms enabling agentic and third-party system access, leveraging data to guide optimizations of API gateways and developer ecosystem success metrics.
Qualifications
- Extensive expertise in building and operating scalable, public APIs with proficiency in REST, GraphQL, and gRPC. Skilled in API versioning and crafting excellent developer experiences. Experience designing for high availability and failure isolation in distributed systems.
- Strong focus on API security, implementing OAuth, JWT, rate limiting, and managing high-throughput traffic. Ability to optimize for low latency while maintaining data consistency across partners.
- Proven leadership in managing engineering teams, including senior-level engineers, with excellent communication skills to collaborate with external technology teams and internal stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
- Background in marketplaces, search engines, or transaction-heavy platforms.
- Experience managing multi-region, low-latency systems.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes and modern cloud infrastructure environments.
- Proven ability to advance legacy systems while continuously delivering value to customers.
Benefits and Perks
- Hybrid work flexibility: onsite presence two days per week with up to 20 remote days annually.
- Mental health support including company-paid therapy sessions and subscription to HeadSpace.
- Company-wide annual week off for team rejuvenation.
- Generous paid parental leave and vacation policies including your birthday off and paid volunteer time.
- Career development support with development funds, leadership programs, and access to extensive e-learning resources.
- Travel discounts, employee resource groups, and 20 days paid time off upon start.
- Comprehensive private health and dental insurance, life and disability coverage.
Work Environment and Inclusion
OpenTable promotes a global, dynamic workplace that supports flexible schedules to engage with international teams and partners. We ensure compliance with local labor laws and offer accommodations to create an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives thrive. We welcome applicants needing any accommodations during recruitment or employment.
