Job description
About Magnet Forensics
Magnet Forensics is a leading global provider of digital investigative software that acquires, analyzes, and shares evidence from devices such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices. Our innovative solutions help thousands of customers worldwide enhance digital investigations, supporting crime fighting, asset protection, and national security efforts.
Our workforce is globally distributed and growing, fostering an environment where your contributions have real-world impact, supported by learning opportunities and a talented team.
Role Overview
We seek an Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of 5-10 Machine Learning Engineers who develop AI systems enabling our digital forensic offerings. The role centers on talent acquisition, mentoring, career progression, performance management, elevating AI/ML standards, and fostering a strong community of practice within the team.
Our ML Engineers operate in cross-functional groups focused on missions rather than disciplines, collaborating with Software Engineers and SDETs. The Engineering Manager works with AI Engineering leadership and Tech Leads to guide technical directions and partner with Product and UX teams to align efforts with user needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure operational excellence by owning team deliverables, continuously improving workflows, and maintaining clear, low-complexity decision-making frameworks that empower team autonomy.
- Provide technical oversight by engaging with ongoing work, identifying risks, evaluating trade-offs, and collaborating with Tech Leads to steer complex projects aligned with long-term goals.
- Mentor and support engineers in managing ambiguous tasks, making technical decisions, preparing for critical discussions, and expanding their responsibilities through meaningful ownership.
- Encourage a culture of experimentation, facilitating safe idea sharing, hypothesis testing, and leveraging data-driven learning to adapt in a rapidly evolving domain.
- Collaborate across Product, UX, and leadership to synchronize roadmap objectives with team capacity, ensuring solutions address the right user problems.
- Develop and sustain a cohesive, distributed team culture by refining communication and processes that capitalize on time zone coverage between Canada and Sweden.
- Lead the adoption of AI-assisted development tools judiciously, balancing productivity gains against potential risks and focusing on genuine value add rather than hype.
Candidate Profile
- At least 3 years of engineering leadership experience, with proven success in building productive teams, coaching engineers, and delivering results regardless of formal title.
- Practical experience creating applied AI/ML systems sufficient to assess engineering quality, provide credible technical input, and raise team standards.
- A coaching-oriented leadership style, committed to fostering growth through direct, actionable feedback, especially guiding senior and staff engineers.
- Exceptional technical judgment to navigate complex trade-offs and shape maintainable, adaptable solutions without always having clear-cut answers.
- Strong interpersonal skills enabling effective communication with cross-functional stakeholders including engineers, PMs, UX specialists, and executives.
- Experience collaborating across distributed teams, recognizing distinctions between remote and distributed work, and skillfully nurturing team cohesion across locations.
- Knowledge of integrating AI-driven development tools thoughtfully within engineering workflows to enhance productivity and quality.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in security, healthcare, or legal sectors where accuracy is critical.
- Experience deploying AI/ML solutions in constrained environments such as on-premises, edge, or air-gapped systems.
- Expertise in scalable, distributed system architecture and operations.
- Familiarity with MLOps tools, including experiment tracking, model versioning, and continuous integration/deployment for machine learning.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers an annual salary range from 160,000 to 210,000 Canadian dollars, with potential variation depending on qualifications, location, and related factors.
- Generous paid time off policies
- Competitive salary package
- Opportunities for volunteer engagement
- Employee reward and recognition programs
- Active employee resource groups and committees
- Healthcare coverage and retirement benefits
