Job Overview

This full-time position for the State of Tennessee is based in Covington, TN, within the Department of Safety and Homeland Security's Driver License District 4 (Tipton County). The role involves conducting driver's license examinations including vision, written, and road skills tests as per Tennessee state regulations. The job requires interacting with the public to determine eligibility for services such as license renewals, replacements, testing, and handgun permits, while also handling fees and application data accurately.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide the public with clear explanations on state laws, licensing rules, and Department regulations related to driver licensing and services.
  • Collect fees and verify identification documents such as social security cards, proof of residency, and valid licenses.
  • Manage cash handling and register reconciliation, prepare bank deposits, and ensure financial accuracy daily.
  • Guide applicants through form completion, administer vision, written, and driving tests following state guidelines, and update results in the licensing database.
  • Inspect vehicles for safety compliance, including lights, brakes, and signals, and assess applicants' adherence to traffic regulations during road tests.
  • Maintain and update applicant records in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), verifying all personal data for accuracy.
  • Handle complex cases, address customer queries, process special assistance accommodations, and support audits or supply ordering as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education required; proof of education must be provided.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check including fingerprinting; certain criminal convictions disqualify candidates per Title 49 CFR guidelines.
  • Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license before appointment.
  • Driver record over the past five years must be clean of DUI, reckless driving, moving violation suspensions, and more than four moving violations unless exceptions apply.
