Job description

Role Overview

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the global design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS data centers, encompassing all hardware from servers to power and cooling systems to ensure seamless customer access. This role as an Electrical Colo Regional Engineer in Auckland supports full lifecycle data center projects from design to maintenance, acting as the key electrical engineering resource in the region with extensive collaboration across teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colocation vendors to review and contribute design inputs for new data centers, ensuring compliance with AWS standards and integration of AWS products.
  • Serve as the resident engineer throughout new colocation construction, supporting phases including commissioning and handover.
  • Conduct troubleshooting, root cause analyses, and develop corrective action reports for equipment and site failures.
  • Provide operational support including specialized training, procedure reviews, and event assistance for critical equipment.
  • Offer technical expertise for upgrades and capacity expansions in existing data centers to enhance availability and efficiency.
  • Lead design review and approval processes for data center upgrades with operating partners.
  • Coordinate with various internal teams such as design engineering, server hardware, EHS, and operations to maintain service consistency and reliability.
  • Manage multiple projects across different geographic regions simultaneously.
  • Plan and execute engineering audits at leased or colocation data centers, producing detailed risk assessments with recommended mitigation strategies.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Certification or education in commissioning, such as NETA or ASHRAE courses.
  • Strong understanding of critical data center mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience in design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities or data centers.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with local building codes and regulations relevant to the region.
  • Knowledge of commercial or industrial power systems and mechanical systems.
  • Experience progressing design concepts from initial exploration through development and deployment.
  • Ability to use various web-based and software tools for calculations and data analysis.
