About Ebony Forest

Ebony Forest is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the native and endemic flora and fauna of Mauritius. Since 2006, they have successfully planted over 160,000 native plants and cleared more than 35 hectares of invasive forest. Their Visitor and Ecology Centre, launched in 2017, supports sustainable funding for long-term conservation and engages the public in environmental education and awareness. Ebony Forest also focuses on inspiring and training future conservationists through hands-on fieldwork and community outreach activities.

Role Overview

The Conservationist role is based full-time on-site in Anse Jonchee or Montagne Longue, Mauritius. The position involves active participation in habitat restoration and species conservation efforts. Daily responsibilities include propagating native plants, planting trees, removing invasive species, conducting ecological monitoring, and collecting environmental data in forest and field environments. The Conservationist will manage nursery and restoration areas, assist in biodiversity surveys, and support ongoing research projects. Collaboration with colleagues, volunteers, and partner organizations is necessary to ensure effective and impactful conservation work, while adhering to safety and environmental guidelines.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Background in conservation biology, ecology, or environmental sciences with a focus on native species restoration.
• Hands-on skills in plant identification, habitat and resource management, ecological monitoring, and familiarity with field equipment.
• Competency in data collection, record maintenance, basic data analyses, and reporting relevant to conservation projects.
• Strong communication skills for collaboration in multidisciplinary teams.
• Physical ability to work outdoors in diverse weather conditions and terrains, following safety protocols.
• Relevant academic credentials such as a diploma or degree in conservation, biology, forestry, environmental management, or related fields preferred.
• Experience with community conservation initiatives, volunteer coordination, or non-profit environments is advantageous.
• Capable of working independently, taking initiative, and adapting to evolving project requirements; knowledge of Mauritian ecosystems is a plus.
• Self-motivated with the capacity to efficiently perform tasks with minimal supervision.
• Flexibility to work extended hours under challenging conditions.
• Ability to live and cooperate harmoniously with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Possession of a manual driving license.
• Skills to lead and manage a small team.
• Preference given to citizens and residents of Mauritius.
