Role Overview

We are seeking skilled Android Developers to join a digital delivery team building impactful services for citizens across the UK. You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including designers, product managers, and technical experts to create and maintain user-friendly, accessible, and reliable Android applications used by millions. This role involves contributing to both development and architectural decisions while upholding high standards of software engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and sustain robust Android applications utilizing Kotlin.
• Interpret user needs and business objectives into dependable and scalable technical solutions.
• Produce clear, thoroughly tested, and maintainable code in line with contemporary Android development methodologies.
• Collaborate effectively within an agile, cross-functional team comprising designers, product owners, QA specialists, and fellow developers.
• Engage in technical discussions including code reviews and architectural planning.
• Develop automated unit and UI tests, contributing to continuous integration and deployment pipelines.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues, bugs, and performance bottlenecks.
• Ensure considerations for security, accessibility, privacy, resilience, and performance are embedded throughout the development life cycle.
• Document technical processes and share expertise within the team.
• Establish and maintain best practices, coding standards, and design patterns across projects.
• Keep abreast of the latest developments in Android and mobile technology domains.
• Support a positive and inclusive engineering culture, mentoring colleagues and sharing knowledge as appropriate.

Required Skills and Experience

• Substantial professional experience in Android app development with strong expertise in Kotlin.
• Thorough knowledge of the Android SDK and development environment.
• Familiarity with modern Android architectural patterns and development practices.
• Experience integrating Android apps with backend services and APIs.
• Proficiency in automated testing, including unit tests and UI tests.
• Comfortable using Git and modern software development workflows.
• Adherence to software engineering principles such as clean code, modular design, maintainability, and version control.
• Ability to identify and resolve application defects and optimize performance effectively.

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge of Java and skills in maintaining or updating legacy Java codebases.
• Experience or familiarity with Jetpack Compose and classic Android Views.
• Expertise using Android Jetpack libraries and architecture components.
• Experience with asynchronous programming utilizing Kotlin Coroutines.
• Understanding of Android application architecture and design pattern usage.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated build/deployment workflows.
• Experience interacting with cloud services and RESTful APIs.
• Awareness of mobile app security and data protection concepts.
• Competence in developing applications accessible according to recognized standards.
• Knowledge of analytics, monitoring tools, and performance optimization for mobile apps.
