Job Overview

The role of a 3D Printing Model Maker encompasses designing, preparing, manufacturing, finishing, and maintaining three-dimensional models by utilizing various 3D printing technologies. This position involves interpreting digital designs, managing files for printing, operating printers, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the final products meet precise criteria including accuracy, quality, visual appeal, and functionality.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and produce 3D models using diverse printing technologies and machines.
• Analyze and understand 3D digital models, CAD files, technical sketches, and design instructions.
• Prepare print files meticulously by verifying model geometry, dimensions, orientation, supports, wall thickness, infill, and other relevant printing specifications.
• Operate different types of 3D printers such as FDM, SLA, resin-based, SLS, or comparable systems as required by projects.
• Choose suitable printing materials, set layer heights, temperatures, speeds, support structures, and other parameters aligned with project needs.
• Conduct test prints and adjust settings to achieve target dimensional accuracy, surface texture, strength, and visual standards.
• Oversee printing processes and identify problems like warping, layer separation, insufficient extrusion, failed supports, resin defects, or inconsistencies in print quality.
• Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on 3D printers, print beds, nozzles, resin systems, calibration tools, and complementary equipment.
• Safely detach completed prints and conduct post-processing tasks including cleaning, curing, removing supports, sanding, trimming, polishing, and prepping surfaces.
• Assemble complex multi-part models using tools, adhesives, fasteners, or other approved attachment methods.
• Apply finishing touches such as painting, coating, filling, polishing, or detailed work when necessary.
• Carry out thorough quality checks to confirm dimensional accuracy, surface finish, structural stability, color fidelity, and overall aesthetic quality.
• Utilize precision measurement instruments and inspection devices to validate dimensions and tolerances.
• Keep detailed records of print jobs, materials utilized, machine configurations, production times, failures, reprints, and quality outcomes.
• Organize and manage digital model files, print profiles, production documentation, and project data systematically.
• Track inventory levels of filaments, resins, powders, spare parts, tools, and other consumables related to 3D printing.
• Ensure proper storage, labeling, handling, and protection of printing materials against contamination or environmental damage.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace across printing and post-processing areas.
• Adhere strictly to equipment operational protocols, chemical safety standards, workplace safety guidelines, and company rules.
• Collaborate with designers, engineers, architects, product developers, artists, and technical staff to fulfill project requirements.
• Provide informed technical input regarding model design adjustments, material choices, structural aspects, and production efficiency improvements.
• Participate in prototype creation, product evaluations, scale and architectural models, artistic work, educational model production, and bespoke projects.
• Identify and propose enhancements in print quality, production speed, material usage, and finishing techniques.
• Assist in evaluating and integrating new 3D printers, materials, software solutions, technologies, and manufacturing methods.
• Promptly report issues such as equipment malfunctions, material shortages, delays, safety hazards, and quality deficiencies.
• Maintain meticulous attention to detail, superior craftsmanship, accuracy, and consistency throughout the manufacturing workflow.
• Perform other relevant model-making, 3D printing, prototyping, finishing, and production duties as delegated by management.
