Job description
Position Overview
Join Vannguard Utility Partners as an Underground Utility Locator and engage in a fulfilling outdoor career. This role offers the independence of working outside and employs specialized equipment alongside digital mapping tools to identify underground cables, pipes, and utilities to avoid damage and maintain safety during excavations, landscaping, and construction activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate company vehicles traveling from home to various job sites to handle scheduled tickets, emergency requests, and relocations.
- Utilize provided utility maps and locating devices to detect underground utilities such as electrical lines, gas pipelines, telephone and communication cables.
- Mark utility locations using paint and flags while conveying critical information to excavation crews or relevant officials.
- Respond to emergency calls outside regular hours following a predetermined rotation schedule.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Possess basic computer skills to navigate mapping and location software.
- Hold a valid driver’s license applicable to the state of employment.
- Capable of working extended hours including overtime as job demands require.
- Fulfill Vannguard’s Drug-Free Workplace standards including passing a pre-employment drug test.
- Exhibit strong self-management and communication capabilities to liaise effectively with supervisors and clients.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Physical Demands
- Drive between 50 and 300+ miles daily within assigned territory.
- Frequently mount and dismount vehicles more than 50 times each day.
- Walk and stand over uneven terrain for distances exceeding a mile under various weather conditions.
- Lift weights ranging from 50 to 150 pounds as needed.
- Endure extended periods of sitting during driving tasks.
- Work outdoors regardless of weather.
Work Schedule & Conditions
- Full-time position with 10-hour shifts, Monday to Friday.
- Mandatory on-call duties and overtime availability.

- Work involves minimal person-to-person interaction and primarily outdoor activities, aligned with COVID-19 safety considerations.
