Role Overview

This opportunity is offered through a partner company seeking a Technical Writer specializing in PostgreSQL to be based remotely in the United Arab Emirates. The role involves contributing to a distributed team focused on open-source PostgreSQL and database technologies. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing clear, precise, and user-friendly technical documentation that spans the product lifecycle. Collaboration with engineers, product managers, QA professionals, and other writers is essential to create accessible materials for audiences with varying technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and update comprehensive technical documents, such as installation guides, configuration manuals, troubleshooting instructions, user manuals, man pages, help prompts, and release notes.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams including engineering, product management, QA, and documentation specialists to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
• Simplify complex PostgreSQL and database-related topics into clear content understandable by users of different technical backgrounds.
• Utilize Markdown, images, diagrams, and other formats to produce engaging and effective documentation.
• Maintain documentation in a docs-as-code environment using version-controlled workflows.
• Employ AI-assisted tools to enhance drafting, editing, structuring, formatting, and overall document quality while ensuring correctness.
• Participate actively in team meetings, discussions, planning sessions, and documentation strategy development.
• Engage with open-source communities through forums, mailing lists, and other platforms to share knowledge and gather insights.
• Conduct research on emerging technologies and contribute to upstream documentation, technical blogs, or knowledge-sharing activities when appropriate.
• Support the creation and upkeep of automated documentation testing, validation processes, and continuous integration/continuous deployment pipelines related to documentation.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in technical writing, producing accurate and high-quality documentation.
• Exceptional proficiency in written and spoken English, capable of explaining technical concepts clearly.
• Experience documenting complex software systems and creating user-centric materials for technical audiences.
• Strong knowledge of markup languages, particularly Markdown.
• Hands-on experience installing and configuring database servers on Linux operating systems.
• Familiarity with docs-as-code practices and tools such as Git, Jenkins, Markdown, HTML, and JavaScript.
• Proven use of AI tools to aid technical writing tasks.
• Comfortable navigating the Linux command line and using developer tools like Git, GCC, and GDB.
• Understanding of distributed systems and database server development principles.
• Ability to work autonomously and manage priorities within a globally distributed team.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, experienced with Slack, Jira, Notion, Zoom, mailing lists, and community forums.
• Quick learner with problem-solving skills, able to contribute positively to a distributed work environment.
• Developer or DevOps background is highly advantageous.
• Experience contributing to PostgreSQL or other open-source projects, or active participation in the PostgreSQL community is a significant plus.
• In-depth understanding of PostgreSQL internals and advanced database topics like storage engines, encryption at rest, and cloud orchestration is preferred.
• Experience developing automation for documentation, including CI/CD pipelines and validation tools, is beneficial.
