Position Overview
The Residential Worker B position involves creating a secure and supportive atmosphere for staff, residents, and visitors within Emergency, Transitional, and Supportive Housing programs of the ministry unit. This role contributes significantly to client welfare and the safe functioning of shelter operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive role model by fostering respectful and professional relationships that uphold clients' dignity.
- Continuously monitor the environment and client behaviors to maintain safety and enforce shelter policies.
- Supervise clients, ensuring adherence to all rules and regulations.
- Execute thorough shift handover procedures before and after each shift.
- Keep accurate records including shelter logs and required documentation.
- Assist in resolving conflicts among clients.
- Manage necessary paperwork and distribution as needed.
- Prepare and serve meals to clients.
- Handle client intake processes, including responding to inquiries, interviewing, orienting new clients, and communicating program expectations.
- Provide clients with information and referrals to community resources.
- Perform household maintenance duties such as cleaning rooms, common areas, and facilities.
- Pack client belongings and ready rooms for incoming clients.
- Manage laundry services for both the shelter and clients.
- Conduct basic building maintenance, including refuse collection and spot cleaning.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Conditions
- The role operates within a residential community setting potentially exposed to challenging interactions, unpleasant odors, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and other hazards.
- Minimal travel is required.
Health and Safety
- Completion of general orientation and annual workplace safety training is mandatory.
- Contribution to safety procedures including snow removal, clearing exits, and cleaning spills.
- Use of personal protective equipment such as gloves and glasses as per universal precautions.
Physical Requirements
- Regular physical activities include reaching, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching.
- Capability to lift or move up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to navigate two flights of stairs both inside and outside the shelter.
Qualifications
- Completion of High School education is required.
- Possession of a 1-2 year certificate in a Social Services-related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in social service environments with marginalized populations is necessary.
Mandatory Certifications and Checks
- Valid Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check acceptable to The Salvation Army.
- Clearance from The Salvation Army Abuse Registry Check.
- Annual completion of WHMIS training.
- Completion of Praesidum Academy training modules pertinent to the role.
- Current certifications in Standard First Aid/CPR, Foodsafe, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.

Compensation
The role's salary range is outlined in a Collective Agreement, spanning from $24.73 to $25.23, with a maximum of $25.73 per hour. Placement within this range factors in market conditions, internal fairness, and individual qualifications and experience.
