Overview
The Principal Data Center Operator independently manages one or more data center facilities, overseeing operational performance and ensuring facility health to drive significant improvements. This role involves leading teams in incident resolution, managing complex technical challenges, and utilizing advanced automation to reduce risks. The operator supports data center expansions, handles installation and maintenance oversight, and directs infrastructure upgrades to enhance efficiency and stability.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain sole responsibility for one or multiple data center sites, ensuring optimal operation.
- Analyze performance metrics such as capacity, temperature, availability, and cleanliness to identify trends and recommend operational enhancements.
- Continuously monitor power, cooling, and security systems to implement major facility improvements.
- Collaborate across departments and regions to align processes with industry standards such as Lean and Six Sigma, leading major improvement projects.
- Lead on-site resources in addressing incidents and communicate effectively during execution.
- Manage escalated technical issues and direct triage or escalation as needed, leveraging automation and monitoring technologies.
- Maintain and update a comprehensive data center knowledge base documenting processes and solutions.
- Prepare for and execute incident or crisis management protocols consistent with business continuity plans.
- Conduct root cause analyses post-incident to enhance operational procedures.
- Oversee new data center builds and expansions, coordinating closely with project teams and engineering.
- Manage installation, repairs, inventory, logistics, and direct component upgrades or replacements.
- Plan and execute rack deployments and upgrades to network physical infrastructure.
- Ensure proactive maintenance focused on facility efficiency and stability, including airflow, power systems, and containment.
- Manage moderate-complexity projects, delegating tasks, monitoring timelines, and adjusting plans as needed.
- Engage with stakeholders and business leaders to ensure solutions meet organizational needs, promoting inclusivity and diverse perspectives.
- Resolve moderately complex issues through data analysis and problem-solving, escalating unresolved challenges appropriately.
- Engage in continuous learning and professional development while mentoring junior team members.
- Contribute process improvement ideas and implement workflow enhancements collaboratively.
- Participate in recruitment efforts by interviewing and assessing candidates to support talent development.
