Job description
Overview
Join the Digital & Data team at the Ministry of Education in Wellington as a Cloud Solution Architect. This permanent role offers a chance to contribute to transforming New Zealand's education technology landscape by designing cloud architectures that enhance educational outcomes nationally. You will collaborate with business and technical teams to deliver secure and scalable cloud initiatives aligning with government and organisational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee end-to-end data architecture on AWS, managing data ingestion, transformation, storage, and consumption layers using services such as S3, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, Redshift, and dbt.
- Establish and refine architectural standards, patterns, and improvements for ETL/ELT pipelines incorporating backup and recovery strategies.
- Lead technical design for data migrations from legacy systems like SQL Server to modern AWS platforms and develop new data product architectures.
- Contribute to creating data quality frameworks that include automated testing and alerting mechanisms.
- Design and enhance strategies for tagging data to support classification and protection of private information.
- Participate in defining Infrastructure as Code standards utilizing AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK, or Terraform and review infrastructure updates for cost efficiency, security, and scalability.
- Drive cost optimization efforts and guide performance tuning across Redshift and Glue workloads.
- Lead the development of Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) architectural patterns.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience designing cloud-based solutions within large, complex organizations.
- Strong expertise in AWS and/or Azure cloud services, architecture frameworks, and industry best practices.
- Skilled in producing architectural documentation, solution artefacts, and technical roadmaps.
- Deep understanding of integration, security, identity management, networking, and data architecture.
- Experience operating within Agile and DevOps cultures.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and influencing abilities.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Commitment to public service ethics and standards of integrity and conduct.

The Digital & Data group drives the Ministry’s delivery of secure and modern digital services that support learners, teachers, and families nationwide. The Architecture Practice guides technology direction, standards, and project alignment with strategic objectives.
Additional Information
Salary ranges from $119,171 to $144,560 annually plus KiwiSaver benefits, with placement based on skills and experience. This role requires working onsite in Wellington.
