Role Summary

The Director of Cloud Engineering is charged with overseeing the strategic direction, operational management, security, governance, and fiscal responsibility for Magnet's cloud infrastructure and shared engineering services. This position collaborates closely with diverse teams across Engineering, Product, UX, Security, IT, Compliance, Finance, and Go-to-Market to support fast-paced product innovation while upholding high standards of reliability, security, compliance, and cost-effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Craft and implement the cloud platform strategy aligned with Magnet’s SaaS product portfolio and organizational goals.
  • Drive operational excellence initiatives like service reliability, observability, incident handling, disaster recovery, and governance.
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership to ensure scalable and robust cloud services.
  • Lead cross-department efforts to enhance platform uniformity, maturity, and engineering productivity.
  • Champion platform architecture standards and engage in technical governance and architecture review.
  • Oversee cloud platform compliance with security frameworks such as FedRAMP and other regulations.
  • Collaborate with Security and Compliance to design secure-by-default platforms and enforce operational controls.
  • Manage vulnerability assessments, remediation efforts, and security initiatives across platforms.
  • Anticipate and plan for emerging regulatory and sovereign cloud demands for global clientele.
  • Own cloud financial governance encompassing cost management, forecasting, budgeting, and optimization.
  • Establish transparent financial practices and align technology spending with business priorities through partnerships with Finance and Engineering.
  • Incorporate automation and operational tools to refine cost prediction and visibility.
  • Balance innovation, functionality, and cost containment via structured frameworks.
  • Lead responsible AI adoption across Engineering and Shared Services, including operationalization and governance of AI platforms and resources.
  • Develop strategies for AI infrastructure management and cost control.
  • Identify AI-enablement opportunities to boost productivity and operational effectiveness.
  • Forge strong relationships with technology vendors by managing provider selection, contract negotiations, and lifecycle management.
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies to maintain modern, efficient, and scalable cloud platforms.
  • Lead and nurture high-performance cloud and platform engineering teams fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous enhancement.
  • Enhance developer experiences by minimizing friction, enriching tools, and enabling self-service platform capabilities.
  • Create an environment facilitating efficient and reliable software development, deployment, and operations.

Candidate Profile

  • Over 10 years of experience in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or related technical areas.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience managing technical teams or engineering managers.
  • Proficiency in public cloud platforms, with a strong preference for AWS expertise.
  • Experience developing and maintaining private cloud infrastructures.
  • Hands-on experience supporting large-scale SaaS platforms in production.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud security, compliance, governance, and risk mitigation practices.
  • Skill in cloud financial management including budgeting, forecasting, and optimization.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional strategic projects.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and executive-level presentation skills.
  • Experience managing vendor evaluations, technology partnerships, and licensing agreements.

Additional Valuable Skills

  • Exposure to compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, SOC 2, or ISO 27001.
  • Background in building platform engineering or developer experience organizations.
  • Familiarity with AI/machine learning infrastructure, governance, and operational frameworks.
  • Experience driving identity and access management initiatives.
  • Knowledge of observability, cloud operations, and reliability engineering.
  • Experience working in fast-growing SaaS companies.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this role at the primary location is between $200,000 to $250,000 CAD. Actual compensation may differ based on location, qualifications, experience, and skills.
