Job description
About the Role
A privately owned engineering firm is expanding its specialized algorithms team focused on sensing and measurement technologies. In real-world capture scenarios, sensor data is inherently incomplete. This role centers on deducing unobserved information in a manner that remains physically credible rather than merely aesthetically smooth, while also quantifying possible accuracy deviations. The precision required aligns more with metrology standards than traditional sensing applications.
The engineer will be responsible for the entire data processing workflow, including the selection and characterization of sensors, transforming experimental approaches on local systems into robust, autonomous operations capable of functioning under uncontrolled conditions. This senior individual contributor position is ideal for an engineer passionate about testing assumptions against actual results rather than debating theory. The position is based in Sydney with some flexibility available.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create methods capable of handling sparse and incomplete point cloud datasets.
- Employ physical and mathematical constraints to ensure results are justifiable and not only visually plausible.
- Choose, calibrate, and evaluate sensors, including analyzing their limitations and failure modes.
- Manage the full data pipeline—including registration, filtering, error budgeting, and final output.
- Transition methods from prototyping through trials to fully unattended production environments.
- Investigate and identify the root causes of accuracy issues within the processing chain.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Proficient in Python with hands-on experience processing point cloud data.
- Expertise in scientific computing and mathematical libraries.
- Strong foundational knowledge in applied mathematics.
- Experience generating quantitative insights from incomplete or imperfect sensor data.
- Understanding of calibration techniques, registration procedures, and propagation of error.
- Willingness to perform validation against actual field data, beyond just simulations.
Additional Information
The role offers a challenging technical environment with a clear focus on delivering high-accuracy sensing solutions. Interested candidates based in Sydney or willing to work onsite with some location flexibility are encouraged to consider this opportunity.
