Job description
About the Role
The Infrastructure team at Mercury plays a critical role, acting as the foundational enabler for the entire organization by developing scalable, secure, and maintainable technology infrastructure. The team focuses on enhancing the platform to streamline code deployment for engineers and agents alike, with an emphasis on security, observability, and operational ease without sacrificing velocity—deploying to production continuously.
As a Software Engineer in Infrastructure, you will be responsible for managing everything from networking to container orchestration, collaborating closely with product teams to meet their AWS-related requirements. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys deep technical challenges, frequent deployments, and consistently improving systems for reliability and usability. You must embrace quality without unnecessary bureaucracy and be comfortable troubleshooting complex Linux issues as well as assisting product engineers with production service behavior.
Technologies and Tools
The infrastructure is predominantly based on AWS services such as EC2, RDS, OpenSearch, ECS, and EKS. The team prefers cloud-native and open-source tools optimized for each task. Infrastructure is managed as code primarily through Terraform, with GitHub and GitHub Actions deployed for version control and continuous delivery. Monitoring and telemetry are handled with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenSearch, and OpenTelemetry. The team is also pioneering agentic infrastructure that allows AI agents to safely interact with the environment, backed by frameworks providing operational guardrails.
Key Responsibilities
- Expand the “Infrastructure Platform” to support Mercury’s growing engineering needs.
- Develop a platform that meets the needs of both human engineers and AI agents.
- Lead significant infrastructure projects by breaking down complex tasks and defining comprehensive infrastructure strategy and design through detailed RFCs and technical specifications.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years hands-on experience with AWS services.
- Strong passion for cloud-native open source technologies and openness to contributing code upstream to these projects.
- In-depth knowledge of low-level operating system concepts including Linux, file systems, and containerization.
- Proven history (2+ years) of producing detailed technical documentation, including RFCs and technical specifications for complex engineering topics.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within regulated environments such as HITRUST or SOC2, with a strong focus on compliance and security.
- At least 2 years working with large-scale Terraform environments and coordinating contributions from multiple engineers.
- 2+ years of programming experience supporting infrastructure platform development.
- Highly motivated to tackle complex, challenging problems and learn continuously.
Additional Information
The Infrastructure team occupies a pivotal role at Mercury, interacting closely with production systems while enabling hundreds of engineers to be more productive through smart, safe abstractions. There is considerable opportunity to innovate and build new capabilities within a secure, observable, and user-friendly infrastructure platform designed to empower rapid shipping.
Mercury is a fintech company providing banking services via partner institutions and is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer committed to diversity and reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities.
