Job description
Role Overview
If you are motivated to solve problems that hinder engineering teams rather than simply observe them, this position is tailored for you. As a Senior Developer Experience Engineer at our Auckland R&D centre, you will take charge of enhancing the systems, tools, and platforms that empower our developers to efficiently build, test, and deploy high-quality software.
Within IDEXX's Veterinary Software division, part of a global Software Centre of Excellence, you will collaborate across teams to optimize developer workflows, standardize tooling, and facilitate the adoption of modern engineering approaches, including innovative AI-assisted development methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify bottlenecks in developer workflows and deliver scalable tooling improvements.
- Maintain and advance internal platforms such as CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and developer environments.
- Develop and execute observability strategies, including dashboards, monitoring, and alert systems.
- Design and implement cloud-native infrastructures leveraging AWS and infrastructure-as-code technologies like Terraform.
- Participate in architectural decisions to enhance scalability, performance, and reliability.
- Promote standardization and best practices across engineering teams.
- Act as a liaison by collaborating closely with developers to understand and address their needs.
- Facilitate the transition to modular and domain-oriented system architectures.
- Create systems that are observable, resilient, and operationally manageable at scale.
- Investigate and deploy AI-enabled development tools and workflows to boost productivity.
- Automate repetitive processes to enhance engineering efficiency.
- Write clean, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code.
- Support robust engineering practices including automated testing, continuous integration/delivery, and DevSecOps.
Qualifications & Experience
- Extensive experience with modern programming languages such as Go, TypeScript, or PHP.
- Demonstrated proficiency with AWS and tools for infrastructure as code, especially Terraform.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native systems architectures and distributed design principles.
- Experience improving developer tooling, workflows, or engineering platforms.
- Excellent analytical abilities to identify patterns and optimize systems.
- Hands-on expertise with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DevSecOps methodologies.
- Effective communication skills and the capability to independently plan and execute outcomes.
- A passion for enhancing developer experience, promoting knowledge sharing, and continuous process improvements.
Preferred Attributes
- Background working in fast-moving, scalable SaaS environments.
- Familiarity with observability monitoring tools such as Datadog or equivalents.
- Exposure to AI-driven development technologies and innovative engineering practices.
Benefits and Work Environment
- Attractive salary and incentive plans.
- Opportunities for ongoing learning and professional growth, both internally and externally.
- Hybrid work setup featuring a collaborative office with amenities including a gym and rooftop meeting spaces.
- Provision of coffee, fresh fruit, and themed Food Truck Fridays.
- Pet-friendly office environment.
- Fully covered Southern Cross health insurance.
- Partially subsidized parking facilities.
- Career advancement prospects within a global organisation.
