Overview
Join a dynamic team based in Dundas, ON as a Material Handler. This role involves multiple responsibilities including material handling, equipment operation, maintenance support, and metal grading. You will be the key representative interacting with customers recycling various metals, ensuring precise weighing and categorization of materials, while delivering a timely and courteous customer experience.
Work Environment and Schedule
- Work occurs outdoors throughout the year, facing varying weather conditions (hot summers and cold winters). The company provides all essential safety attire including winter parkas, branded safety gear, gloves, hard hats, and personal protective equipment.
- The regular Dundas schedule runs Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, plus every alternate Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
- A rigorous 3 to 4-week paid training program is held at the Etobicoke facility with hours Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM and every alternate Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Travel expenses incurred during training are reimbursed weekly.
- Opportunities to earn through overtime work are plentiful for those seeking additional hours.
Primary Responsibilities
- Welcome customers at the yard entrance, guide them to unloading zones, and provide outstanding service with patience and professionalism.
- Examine and unload scrap metals such as copper, shred, heavy melt, mixed metals, and appliances, verifying that declared materials correspond accurately to received items.
- Precisely weigh the materials using scales and generate payout tickets reflecting true weights and classifications.
- Sort, grade, and classify ferrous and non-ferrous metals meticulously to ensure integrity and quality.
- Use basic material handling equipment safely to relocate, arrange, and stack materials within the yard.
- Support general maintenance tasks in the facility including inventory management and upkeep of the yard.
- Conduct seasonal maintenance activities like snow shoveling and salting paths around scales and walkways during winter.
- Consistently follow health, safety, and operational procedures without compromise.
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Proven customer service skills with experience in settings like retail, food service, hospitality, or similar environments requiring patience and interpersonal finesse.
- Aptitude for quickly learning and accurately applying complex metal identification standards critical for financial accuracy.
- Dependability, a strong sense of responsibility, coachability, and a readiness to learn on the job.
- Physical fitness able to endure extended periods of standing, bending, walking, and working outdoors.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a reliable personal vehicle, as the site lacks public transit options.
- Ownership of CSA-approved steel-toe work boots is mandatory; an annual reimbursement for boots is offered after employment conversion.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Previous construction, labor, or industrial work experience is advantageous.
- Certification in WHMIS and First Aid/CPR is beneficial.
Compensation and Hiring Details
The pay range for this position is approximately $19 to $20 per hour. This vacancy is for an available position ready for immediate hire. Candidates will undergo evaluation supported by artificial intelligence tools.
