Senior Mobile Engineer - React Native

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Mobile Engineer to play a crucial role in developing and enhancing the Xero Accounting App — our leading mobile solution that empowers small businesses globally to manage their finances on the go.

Role Impact and Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of complex mobile features within the React Native ecosystem, owning projects end to end with a focus on usability and real-world impact.
• Advance our React Native architecture by contributing to scalable, maintainable mobile platform design that accelerates delivery without sacrificing quality.
• Ensure high standards of app performance, reliability, security, and scalability through ongoing operation, monitoring, incident response, and root cause analysis.
• Drive improvements in engineering productivity by identifying and eliminating inefficiencies, leveraging automation and AI tools to shorten development cycles.
• Mentor engineering colleagues through collaborative code reviews, technical leadership, and fostering a culture of engineering excellence.

Team Collaboration

Collaborate closely with Product, Design, backend, platform, and domain teams to deliver seamless mobile experiences and contribute to cross-functional solutions including APIs and data flow architecture.

Working Environment

This position is based in Melbourne (or Sydney) with a hybrid work model supporting both in-office collaboration days and flexible remote work arrangements.

Key Qualifications

• Proven expertise in building and shipping production-grade React Native mobile applications.
• Comprehensive understanding of mobile app development challenges at scale including performance optimization, release procedures, observability, and production troubleshooting.
• Experience leading complex features from conception through launch and operational maintenance.
• Familiarity with mobile backend integrations, API design, or Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) architecture.
• Background supporting large-scale user bases with an appreciation of architectural and technical scaling complexities.
• A pragmatic approach to technical decision making balancing delivery speed, customer focus, system reliability, and maintainability.
• A demonstrated commitment to raising team capabilities through mentoring, code reviews, and technical guidance.
• Active usage of AI-driven development assistance, automation, and modern tooling to enhance team efficiency and software delivery.
