About the Role
Join DC Thomson in Aberdeen, Scotland as a Full Stack Software Engineer to help elevate how we connect with audiences through advanced technology, data, and AI. You will be part of a dynamic engineering team delivering scalable customer engagement platforms across trusted media and digital brands.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and maintain software applications, services, and integrations within our customer engagement infrastructure.
- Create and enhance personalized customer experiences and profiling tools.
- Build and support backend systems managing customer data flows between various platforms.
- Implement scalable email and customer communication using Iterable.
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve software and system issues efficiently.
- Promote best engineering practices through automation, code quality improvement, and continuous process enhancement.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute knowledge across the engineering community.
- Investigate and apply emerging AI tools and technologies to optimize software engineering and customer interactions.
What We Look For
- Prior commercial experience developing software in modern engineering environments.
- Proven ability in building full stack applications using React and Node.js.
- Strong hands-on experience with JavaScript/TypeScript for web application development.
- Expertise in API design, building, and consumption, particularly with GraphQL.
- Experience with at least one relational database technology such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
- Skilled in developing, integrating, and maintaining backend services and data-driven applications.
- Solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best engineering practices.
- Familiar with source control, automated testing, and continuous integration/deployment workflows.
- Awareness of secure coding standards, software quality assurance, and operational reliability.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in integrated systems.
- Collaborative mindset with effective multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
- Experience conducting code reviews and maintaining shared codebases and engineering standards.
- Strong enthusiasm for continuous learning and expanding technical skills.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.
- Python programming experience.
- Familiarity with customer engagement, marketing automation, or personalization platforms.
- Knowledge of Iterable or similar customer communication services.
- Exposure to cloud-based services and contemporary engineering tooling.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools within software workflows.
- Working knowledge of event-driven architectures and data integration platforms focused on customer data ecosystems.
Work Environment
This position offers a hybrid work model, combining remote flexibility with the opportunity to collaborate in person. You will be expected to attend one of our UK offices (Dundee, Aberdeen, Glasgow, or London) up to two days per month for team meetings, planning, and key business activities, with flexibility to work remotely otherwise.
