About the Role
Join Westpac Group's Sydney office to contribute at the crossroads of artificial intelligence, data engineering, and macroeconomics. This role transcends traditional data science by developing pioneering data-driven research and insights that influence one of Australia's foremost economic voices. Embedded within the DataX and Economics teams under WIB DDAI (Data, Digital & AI), you will create impactful products and forecasts for institutional clients while shaping Westpac's market perspective.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement econometric and machine learning models focused on forecasting, nowcasting, and scenario analyses.
- Develop AI-powered tools such as natural language processing, automation, and insight generation to enhance research workflows in production environments.
- Convert economic theories and hypotheses into rigorous quantitative models.
- Utilize diverse datasets including macroeconomic, transactional, and alternative data sources to extract scalable insights.
- Manage the complete model lifecycle from experimentation to deployment, validation, and governance.
- Communicate findings effectively to both technical peers and executive leadership.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
- Demonstrated success in delivering production-level data science and machine learning solutions, beyond proofs of concept or academic prototypes.
- Strong expertise in statistical modeling and time-series analysis.
- Advanced proficiency in Python, including libraries such as scikit-learn, statsmodels, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
- Experience engineering scalable models and data-driven products within enterprise environments.
- Background or exposure to economics, econometrics, or financial markets.
- Hands-on experience with natural language processing or large language model development, coupled with cloud ML platforms like Azure ML or Amazon SageMaker.
- Comfort working collaboratively with research, strategy, or domain specialists.
- An inquisitive, commercially aware, and delivery-oriented mindset capable of reducing ambiguity into structured and scalable solutions.
- A builder mentality focused on shipping real-world solutions with clear and influential communication skills.
