About the Role
Join a team dedicated to advancing responsible artificial intelligence at Amazon. This role focuses on creating privacy-centric, accessible, and trustworthy AI experiences used by millions. The mission centers on pushing generative AI innovation boundaries while maintaining the highest standards for customer trust, privacy, inclusion, and accessibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead several engineering teams to develop foundational platforms and consumer features that support scalable, trustworthy AI experiences, overseeing architectural decisions around privacy-preserving AI, responsible AI frameworks, and accessibility.
- Shape and execute the technical strategy for privacy-enhancing architectures such as federated learning, differential privacy, and on-device processing to secure customer data without compromising quality.
- Establish and expand teams that build AI evaluation frameworks, safety mechanisms for large language models, and observability solutions to monitor model quality, hallucinations, and trust indicators in production environments.
- Collaborate across Product, Design, Legal, Policy, and Research teams to reconcile priorities, balance innovation with trust, and promote responsible AI standards organization-wide.
- Mentor and develop engineering leaders in AI safety, privacy-enhancing technologies, and responsible system design, fostering an inclusive culture dedicated to delivering on complex, multi-year plans.
Typical Daily Activities
Begin with reviewing operational and health dashboards, lead design evaluations with engineers, engage with cross-disciplinary teams for roadmap and priority alignment, conduct career development sessions with direct reports, provide critical feedback on technical documentation, and prepare strategic narratives for planning sessions.
Team Overview
The team builds essential systems ensuring Amazon's AI services remain trustworthy, private, and accessible. This includes privacy-focused data pipelines, AI safety controls, transparency tools, and evaluation frameworks applied across multiple products. The intersection between generative AI innovation and customer protection defines their work, requiring partnerships with research, policy, and product groups. The focus is on expanding responsible AI infrastructure to support emerging agentic and multimodal capabilities.
Basic Qualifications
- At least 3 years managing engineering teams.
- 8+ years of professional engineering experience.
- 8+ years of experience leading the design and development of multi-tiered web services.
- Strong understanding of engineering best practices across the entire software, hardware, and network development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, version control, build pipelines, testing, certification, and live site operations.
- Proven ability to partner effectively with product and program management.
- Experience designing or architecting both new and existing systems, focusing on design patterns, reliability, and scalability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong communication skills with ability to engage users, technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements, articulate software features, technical designs, and product strategies.
- Experience with recruiting, hiring, mentoring, coaching, and managing software engineers to enhance their skills and effectiveness as product-focused engineers.
