Utility Locator

Role Overview

The Utility Locator is tasked with pinpointing and marking subsurface utilities to ensure excavation and construction projects proceed safely. Utilizing locating devices, detailed maps, and work directives, this position accurately traces underground infrastructure to prevent asset damage and safeguard public welfare while supporting field activities with reliable and prompt locating services.

Core Responsibilities

• Conduct underground utility locating in compliance with company policies, as well as state and utility regulatory requirements.
• Interpret various documents such as maps, blueprints, GIS data, and work orders to identify utility routes.
• Operate specialized locating tools including transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark subterranean utilities precisely.
• Maintain thorough records of locating tasks, including creating sketches, notes, photographic evidence, GPS data, and completed work orders.
• Address standard locate tickets, urgent and emergency locating requests, high-priority assignments, and re-mark tasks promptly.
• Effectively communicate with contractors, property owners, utility service providers, and internal teams.
• Ensure equipment, tools, and company vehicles are kept in optimal working condition.
• Adhere strictly to safety regulations such as OSHA, 811 guidelines, and state One-Call mandates while performing duties.
• Immediately report any marking errors, possible damage risks, safety concerns, or potential service disruptions.
• Assist team members and support field operations as needed.
• Undertake any additional duties or special projects assigned by management.

• Precision of documentation including photographic and mapped verifications
• High customer and contractor satisfaction levels

Job Requirements

• Minimum education: High school diploma or GED.
• Preferred experience in utility locating services, or relevant sectors such as construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical utilities.
• Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility infrastructure considered advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license is mandatory.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Substantial outdoor work across diverse weather conditions.
• Exposure to construction zones, vehicular traffic, and moving mechanical equipment.
• Work may extend onto private and public right-of-way lands.
• Occasional requirement for emergency or after-hours locating assignments.
• Interpersonal contact with contractors, homeowners, utility entities, project supervisors, field supervisors, and internal personnel.
• The role demands standing, walking, and bending for extended periods; lifting up to 50 pounds; working in trenches, confined spaces, or on uneven surfaces; operating hand tools and locating devices; and having good visual and manual coordination.

This position involves safety-sensitive duties requiring strict adherence to all safety guidelines and protocols to protect personal and public well-being. Compliance with company policies, use of personal protective equipment, safe operation of vehicles and equipment, valid certifications, participation in safety training, and passing drug/alcohol screenings are required. Inability to meet safety standards may lead to disciplinary measures including termination.
