Role Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger directs vehicular movement safely around construction and maintenance work zones. This role involves installing and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to protect workers and the public. Flaggers guide motorists using hand signals, signs, and other approved devices while maintaining vigilance and stamina for standing extended hours in outdoors conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy and remove signs, cones, and other barriers to redirect traffic flow around work sites.
- Manage traffic effectively using stop/slow paddle signals.
- Use two-way radios to maintain clear communication with crew members.
- Stand, walk, and use hands and arms extensively, up to 10 hours daily.
- Handle physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling items that may exceed 50 pounds.
- Drive company vehicles to transport traffic control materials to job locations.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of company vehicles to ensure operational safety.
- Work outdoors exposed to weather, noise, moving machinery, and airborne particles.
- Follow all company policies and contribute to team efforts as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Pass background and motor vehicle records checks.
- Successfully clear a drug test and comply with federal Department of Transportation regulations.
- Wear required safety gear including safety-toe boots, hard hats, safety glasses, and vests.
- Operate two-way radios proficiently.
- Adapt to diverse weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Communicate effectively with contractors and colleagues, ensuring excellent customer service.
- Function cooperatively within a team setting.
- Demonstrate strong attendance, reliable transport, and a diligent work ethic.
- Complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-sponsored Defensive Driver course.
- Be willing to travel statewide with occasional overnight accommodation, and work nights or weekends as project demands.
- Participate in rotating on-call schedules.
