Job description
Position Overview
We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead an engineering team within Amazon's Center of Excellence for Orchestration (ORCA). This role involves guiding the evolution of Amazon's tier-1, multi-tenant orchestration platform that supports essential business workflows across a wide range of Amazon's operations, including Retail and Digital Services.
About ORCA
The ORCA platform, constructed on HERD, serves as a critical infrastructure for executing complex business processes through workflow automation. It provides high operational efficiency with features like automated scaling, throttling, and retry logic, enabling it to manage heavy traffic without requiring customer intervention. ORCA handles orchestration challenges such as execution, monitoring, and fault tolerance, allowing developers to concentrate on business workflow design. It supports various modes including synchronous communication, asynchronous execution, time-based scheduling, and event-driven triggers, while integrating seamlessly with AWS services and solutions like Datapath and Sable.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead and maintain engineering excellence by defining roadmaps and ensuring platform reliability.
- Develop robust, scalable software solutions to uphold high availability for critical business operations.
- Collaborate with product management, architecture teams, and business stakeholders to align on product strategy and execution.
Basic Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years managing engineering teams.
- At least 7 years of hands-on engineering experience.
- Minimum 8 years leading design and development of multi-tier web services.
- Proficiency in software engineering practices throughout development lifecycles: coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, certification, and live site operations.
- Experience working alongside product or program management groups.
- Ability to design and architect scalable and reliable systems using appropriate design patterns.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong communication skills for engaging users, technical teams, and senior executives regarding requirements, features, designs, and strategies.
- Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and managing software engineer teams to enhance skills and productivity.
