Job description
About the Role
Guardsquare is expanding its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region and seeks dedicated Java Software Engineers with a strong enthusiasm for Java internals, compiler technology, software engineering, and application security. This position involves working on DexGuard and other Java-centric products aimed at enhancing Java and Android software performance, size reduction, and protection against reverse engineering and tampering.
You will play a key role in refining a complex and mature codebase, engaging in research on novel code-hardening and optimization methods, and tackling challenging engineering problems balancing security, performance, compatibility, and developer usability. As an early engineer in the Singapore office, you will contribute to establishing and developing the local research and development team alongside newly recruited engineers and experienced colleagues from the headquarters.
A significant part of the role (up to 50%) will be dedicated to R&D Customer Support, which involves diagnosing, reproducing, and debugging complex technical issues directly in collaboration with customers and internal teams. You will report to the local Managing Director for office-related matters and to the R&D Team Lead for technical guidance and development.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and enhance Java-based technologies such as ProGuard, DexGuard, and upcoming Java frameworks.
- Research, evaluate, and apply advanced code-hardening, optimization, and application processing strategies.
- Work extensively with Java bytecode, compiler technologies, build systems, and sophisticated application workflows.
- Debug and resolve intricate technical challenges in collaboration with clients and internal teams.
- Support customers through technical integration and usage of the software.
- Conduct thorough testing to ensure high software quality.
- Keep abreast of advancements in Java, compiler technology, mobile security, and reverse engineering techniques.
Candidate Profile
- Possess a Master’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
- Have 2 to 3 years of practical software engineering experience.
- Demonstrate strong expertise in Java programming.
- Experience managing and navigating large or complex codebases.
- Familiarity with Linux operating systems.
- Competence in low-level programming and debugging practices.
- Strong analytical capabilities and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills to explain complex technical concepts and cooperate with customers.
- Interest in software security principles and reverse engineering methodologies.
Preferable Qualifications
- Knowledge in compiler technologies, Java bytecode intricacies, or complex application processing.
- Experience with code obfuscation and optimization methods.
- Understanding of information security and mobile security principles.
- Experience in reverse engineering and proficiency with related tools.
- Familiarity with Android platform and development tools such as Gradle and ProGuard.
Why Join Guardsquare?
This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with challenging software engineering intersecting Java internals, compiler tech, mobile app security, and reverse engineering. Your innovations will contribute to widely used Java and Android applications for major international clients including banks, social media platforms, and payment providers.
The role is based in Guardsquare's new Singapore office and involves working in a global, collaborative setting that encourages technical autonomy, innovation, and continuous learning.
Guardsquare is committed to fostering diverse teams and open dialogue, promoting technical knowledge sharing, and personal development.
