Role overview

Scotiabank is hiring a Software Developer for its Scotia Digital microservices group in Toronto, Ontario. The role focuses on building the next wave of cloud-native services that support the bank’s mobile app and website. You’ll join a collaborative, fast-moving environment where you can deepen your expertise while contributing to modern banking technology.

In this position, you’ll be involved across the full software delivery lifecycle. Working alongside senior developers, architects, and the Scrum team, you’ll help design, build, test, and support high-quality services. The work also includes complex feature development, improvement of existing platforms, and participation in research and development efforts.

Key responsibilities

• Take part in day-to-day development work within the Scrum team and help the group meet sprint goals and delivery milestones.
• Produce clean, maintainable, and efficient code using strong software engineering practices.
• Support the refinement of technical requirements and specifications.
• Work closely with the Scrum team to organize tasks, deliver features, and surface risks or blockers early.
• Participate in design and code reviews to improve quality, consistency, and long-term maintainability.
• Help with testing efforts, including unit, integration, and functional validation.
• Create and update documentation for system changes, technical designs, and operational procedures when needed.
• Contribute to post-release reviews and identify improvements for future work.
• Apply the bank’s risk expectations and risk culture in everyday development decisions.
• Support a positive, high-performing, inclusive team environment.

Required profile

• A university or college qualification in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
• 3 to 5 years of experience building enterprise or cloud-native applications.
• Practical experience or solid working knowledge of Java-based microservices and distributed systems.
• Exposure to Java 8 or newer, Spring Boot, JUnit, Maven or Gradle, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD workflows.
• Familiarity with source control tools such as Git, SVN, or Bitbucket.
• Understanding of Agile principles and experience in Agile or Scrum teams.
• Basic awareness of software security and code quality tooling such as BlackDuck, Fortify, or SonarQube is considered an advantage.
• Exposure to messaging platforms such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, or Azure Service Bus, along with databases such as RDBMS, NoSQL, or Redis, is an asset.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, plus a willingness to learn new tools and technologies.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with teammates at different experience levels.
• A genuine interest in software development and continuous improvement.
