Role overview
This role offers a chance to become part of a high-performing digital team and contribute across the full delivery cycle. The position covers everything from early ideas and technical planning through implementation, release, and continuous improvement. You will report to the Head of Development and help shape the quality and impact of the team’s digital work.
Work setup
The Digital Centre of Excellence is based in Devon, and the role is designed to allow time in the collaborative Plymouth office as well as working from home.
What you will do
- Create, enhance and support dependable full-stack solutions across both client-side and server-side technologies.
- Turn creative and functional briefs into secure, efficient digital experiences that are built around the user.
- Build accessible, responsive interfaces and pair them with solid back-end logic and system integrations.
- Contribute to technical solution planning and assist with preparing technical documentation where required.
- Connect solutions with content management systems, APIs, databases and external services.
- Work in line with development standards, best practices and agreed delivery methods.
- Partner with designers, project managers and fellow developers to deliver quality work on schedule and within budget.
- Support deployment, monitoring and the continuous improvement of live products.
- Explore new tools and techniques that can improve efficiency and overall quality.
Essential requirements
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- Exposure to at least one modern front-end framework such as Vue.js, React or Angular.
- Understanding of how web applications interact with APIs.
- Hands-on experience building web applications through commercial, freelance, internship, academic or personal projects.
- Basic back-end development knowledge with technologies such as Node.js, .NET, ASP.NET, PHP or similar.
- Understanding of databases and data modelling principles.
- Awareness of responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.
- Experience using Git or another version control system.
- Ability to solve problems and commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Comfort communicating progress and resolutions to customers and stakeholders while working within a team.
- Ability to manage your own workload and meet agreed deadlines.
Desirable background
- Previous commercial experience in a software development role.
- A qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Web Development or a related subject.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure.
- Awareness of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
- Experience working with Node.js.
- Understanding of application security, performance and scalability.
- Familiarity with analytics or monitoring tools such as Google Analytics.
- Experience taking part in technical discussions, solution planning or project planning.
