Role Overview
This position is focused on cost engineering for electromechanical and electronics hardware products, with a strong emphasis on should-costing, teardown analysis, and value engineering. The role requires hands-on evaluation of product designs and manufacturing processes to identify cost drivers, improve cost efficiency, and support design-to-cost decisions.
Core Responsibilities
- Perform teardown-based analysis and should-cost studies for electromechanical products.
- Build and maintain detailed PCBA cost models that account for PCB stack-up, materials, surface finishes, panelization, component pricing, and assembly operations.
- Estimate costs across the product lifecycle, including concept, design, prototype, pilot, and full-scale production stages.
- Evaluate the impact of component choice, yield, takt time, panel usage, logistics, and similar factors on overall cost.
- Track how costs change through design revisions, engineering change notices, and other lifecycle updates.
- Support design-to-cost and value engineering programs with practical cost analysis inputs.
- Review schematics, BOMs, Gerbers, and assembly drawings from a cost-optimization standpoint.
- Monitor industry trends, technological changes, and pricing movement in electronics manufacturing.
- Maintain structured documentation of costing methods, assumptions, and prior cost-saving examples.
- Prepare and deliver cost reports, cost breakdowns, and value engineering recommendations to stakeholders.
Required Profile
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation Engineering, or a closely related field is required.
- Applicants should bring 8 to 15+ years of experience in should-costing and value engineering for electronics hardware.
- Experience across automotive, avionics, industrial, consumer, networking, or IoT electronics will be valuable.
- A solid grasp of hardware design fundamentals, including schematics, BOM structure, and component selection, is essential.
- Understanding of regulatory and quality standards that influence PCBA cost, such as IPC, ISO, and automotive requirements, is expected.
- Proven ability to deliver measurable cost reductions through engineering and sourcing-led strategies is important.
- Strong analytical thinking, clear communication, and cross-functional teamwork skills are needed.
- Familiarity with costing tools and manual calculation methods is also required.
