Role Overview
This is a specialist cybersecurity and digital services organisation that supports security operations and cyber defence for clients in New Zealand and overseas. Its Security Operations Centre works 24/7 to help organisations identify, examine, and respond to changing cyber risks.
The business is seeking a motivated Junior SOC Analyst to join its expanding team. This is a strong entry-level opportunity for someone starting out in cybersecurity who wants practical experience in a fast-moving operational setting and the chance to learn from seasoned security professionals.
In this position, you will assist the Security Operations Centre by keeping watch over security events, analysing alerts, recording incidents, and supporting response efforts. You will also receive ongoing coaching and training while building hands-on experience with modern security tools and operational processes. The role suits someone with a real interest in cybersecurity, strong analytical thinking, and a long-term goal of working in defensive security.
Role Details
Location: Auckland CBD, Level 7, 22 Fanshawe Street, Auckland
Employment: Full-time, permanent
Salary: NZD 70,000 to 90,000 per year
Work model: Hybrid, with 2 days per week onsite and the rest remote
Roster: 4 days on, 4 days off, with 10-hour shifts
Reporting line: SOC Team Lead
Key Responsibilities
- Keep an eye on SIEM, EDR, IDS, and other detection tools for possible threats or suspicious behaviour.
- Carry out first-line review and investigation of security alerts and incidents using agreed procedures and playbooks.
- Escalate events to senior analysts when needed and help with active investigations.
- Record incidents, investigations, and remediation actions clearly and accurately in case management tools.
- Support host-based and network-based analysis during incident response work.
- Help identify and assess new threats, vulnerabilities, and attack techniques.
- Take part in operational reviews, team meetings, and technical learning sessions.
- Contribute ideas and effort toward improving SOC workflows, procedures, and operational practices.
- Build a solid understanding of security operations, threat detection, and incident response methods.
What You Need
- Clear enthusiasm for cybersecurity and a strong desire to develop a career in Security Operations.
- Basic knowledge of IT infrastructure, networking, and operating systems.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and commonly used protocols.
- Strong eye for detail, plus good organisation and documentation ability.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills.
- Ability to work well with others while following set processes and procedures.
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a similar field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Preferred Background
- Exposure to tools and platforms such as SIEM, EDR, IDS/IPS, firewalls, or vulnerability management systems.
- Experience gained through labs, internships, personal projects, CTFs, Hack The Box, TryHackMe, or comparable learning environments.
- Industry certifications such as Security+, SC-900, AZ-900, ISC2 CC, or similar.
- Familiarity with incident response concepts and cybersecurity frameworks.
