Ezra is a B2B digital lending platform built for emerging markets, working alongside mobile and digital wallet operators as well as financial service providers. The company operates across 23 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, supporting 24 operations, with main offices in Nairobi, Kenya and Dubai, UAE.

Its core offerings include Airtime Credit Services (ACS), Nano, and Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL). ACS provides airtime or data advances to prepaid mobile users when they run low on credit. Nano offers on-demand micro cash advances to mobile wallet users. BNPL enables customers to pay for products and services in installments.

As a fintech business, Ezra relies heavily on technology and data for subscriber eligibility checks, offer generation, risk management, loan disbursement, recovery, performance optimisation, reporting, reconciliation, and billing. The platform handles around 21 million loan requests and 1.4 TB of data every day, so reliability, robustness, and security are critical. The company is also looking at new ways to use platform and transaction data to improve existing products and create new opportunities.

Role Summary

The Data Engineer will join the data engineering team and focus on automated data-processing pipelines, with most of the work centred on building and maintaining ETL workflows. These pipelines are used to collect data from partners, validate it, and make it available for customer scoring, internal and external reporting, revenue assurance, and data archiving.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain data-processing and ETL pipelines.
Contribute to the design, rollout, and implementation of data science initiatives.
Produce software that is high-quality, secure, well-documented, readable, and easy to test.
Work closely in English with colleagues across local and remote teams.
Support the assessment of new tools, technologies, and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Practical working knowledge of Python or another programming/scripting language.
Working knowledge of SQL or R.
Strong experience with an RDBMS, including deployment and performance tuning.
Hands-on experience with Git, automated testing, and CI/CD workflows.
Comfortable using Linux as both a user and developer; Debian experience is an advantage.
At least 2 years of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong understanding of PostgreSQL.
Familiarity with software development best practices.
Experience troubleshooting systems and monitoring production environments.
Exposure to scaling systems and improving continuous integration processes.
Knowledge of database administration.
Working knowledge of Java or C/C++ is a plus.
Open to learning new technologies.
Background in modelling or data science is an added advantage.

This role is based in Nairobi, Kenya and reports to the Manager - Data Engineering & Architecture.
