About the Role

Neo is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a small, high-performing squad in Calgary. The company has grown rapidly, with engineering powering a platform that is fully built in-house, supports more than one million customers, runs 150 production services, and ships hundreds of deployments each week.

This position is a hands-on leadership role. You will not only manage people and delivery, but also stay close to the technical work by reviewing code, helping engineers improve implementations, making architectural decisions, and joining technical discussions when needed. The focus is on strengthening the team, improving execution speed, and maintaining a high bar for quality.

Neo emphasizes small teams, fast iteration, strong ownership, and direct feedback. The manager in this role is expected to help the squad move quickly while keeping standards high for performance, reliability, and delivery.

What You Will Do

  • Guide a squad of engineers and take responsibility for both their output and their growth.
  • Coach engineers across levels, from supporting junior team members to helping senior engineers develop into technical leads.
  • Stay actively involved in the technical work through code reviews, architecture decisions, release planning, and hands-on code improvement.
  • Manage the delivery process with small work items, short cycles, and clear priorities.
  • Provide candid, ongoing feedback and maintain a visible performance standard for the team.
  • Address performance concerns promptly instead of letting them drift.
  • Oversee service health and reliability, and improve stability before issues turn into incidents.
  • Run team rituals, remove blockers, assess risks, and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Ensure the team has the structure, predictability, and resources it needs to succeed.
  • Keep technical debt under control so it does not slow the team or create business risk.
  • Participate actively during incidents, support triage, and bring in the right people to resolve problems.
  • Help with hiring by sourcing candidates, aligning interviews, and supporting close decisions.
  • Work closely with the product partner on roadmap, scope, and timelines, and challenge requests when they do not make sense.
  • Build a collaborative team culture where engineers pair, plan, and solve problems together.

What Neo Is Looking For

  • You are genuinely motivated by improving banking and building better financial experiences.
  • You have experience leading an engineering team and a strong point of view on effective management.
  • You are technically strong enough to review code, coach engineers directly, and earn the trust of experienced developers.
  • You give feedback consistently rather than limiting it to formal review cycles.
  • You have participated in hiring engineers and can identify strong candidates.
  • You use process to enable delivery, not as an end in itself.
  • You have dealt with underperformance directly and proactively.
  • You take ownership of production quality as well as delivery commitments.

Important Notes

This opportunity is not intended for someone whose main approach is to shield the team from outside demands and simply coordinate work at a distance. Neo expects leaders who are willing to make difficult calls when they improve team speed, quality, and accountability.

Why Join Neo

  • Work in a small team with meaningful ownership and direct exposure to the product, customer, and business decisions.
  • Receive a competitive salary that is positioned above top tech employers in Calgary.
  • Be eligible for STIP cash bonuses tied to company milestones.
  • Participate in equity compensation through stock options that are valuable from day one.
  • Build experience that can prepare you for future lead or management roles at other Canadian companies.

  • Be part of an organization that has raised more than $400M and serves over one million customers.
  • Relocation assistance is available for candidates moving to Calgary.
  • Health coverage, 21 days of PTO, and parental top-up are included.
