Coater Process Engineer

Role overview

Guardian Industries is hiring a Process Engineer with deep expertise in vacuum coater processes. In this position, you will apply your technical know-how to strengthen environmental, health, safety, and stewardship objectives while improving product consistency and enabling cost-efficient manufacturing. Your work will help build competitive process capabilities that support business growth.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design and continuous improvement of coating processes for existing products and new product introductions.
• Work as a key contributor within the global development organization on new thin film process technologies, product launches, process transfers, and improvement programs.
• Guide an operations team with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, quality, productivity, and delivery of the team’s vision.
• Support plant operations through process engineering interventions that raise quality, performance, and throughput across vacuum coating equipment.
• Actively seek market learnings, external best practices, and fresh ideas that can enhance process technology capability.
• Build stronger technical understanding of products and manufacturing process technologies.
• Communicate ideas, plans, and technical concepts clearly across different levels and regions.
• Stay current on industry developments, innovations, and trends to help shape business strategy.

Required qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification in engineering or a closely related technical field.
• Background in optical thin film technologies and vacuum coating sputtering processes used in solar, semiconductor, or architectural coated glass settings.
• Ability to work through complex technical problems by diagnosing issues, identifying root causes, and applying corrective actions.
• Strong command of structured problem-solving methods such as 8D, Six Sigma, and Lean, with a history of continuous improvement delivery.
• Experience in leading and inspiring high-performing teams.

Preferred experience

• Practical exposure to glass manufacturing operations, especially coating lines.
• Knowledge of thin film optical materials and characterization methods such as AES, XPS, SEM, TEM, X-Rite color measurement, and XRD.
• Experience using thin film coating design and analysis tools such as TFCalc, OptiLayer, Essential Macleod, Ellipsometer, or similar modeling software.
• Hands-on familiarity with laboratory and quality control equipment such as profilometers, HunterLab spectrophotometers, and PerkinElmer instruments, along with chemical and optical coating durability testing.
