Role overview

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering organization is focused on shaping the future of analytics and data platforms through services for databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging, real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Its portfolio includes Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. The broader mission is to build the data platform for the AI era and support data-driven applications at scale.

Within Azure Data, the databases group develops and runs Microsoft’s operational database systems. The team is working toward developer-friendly, mission-critical, AI-enabled operational databases across relational, non-relational, and open-source offerings.

This opening is for a Software Engineer on the Azure SQL Database capacity management team. The work centers on improving reliability, performance, security, and operational excellence while supporting scalable cloud database experiences. The role owns platform building blocks, microservices, and end-to-end service health for critical SQL Database workloads.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and run scalable services that handle capacity allocation, placement, and lifecycle management for Azure SQL Database workloads.
• Strengthen service reliability, performance, and availability using automation, observability, and proactive incident prevention.
• Work closely with teams across Azure Data to deliver resilient, customer-focused solutions for mission-critical workloads.
• Apply modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, telemetry-based development, and DevOps workflows.
• Improve developer efficiency through better tooling, frameworks, and automation.
• Contribute to and reflect Microsoft’s culture and values.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or another related technical field, along with demonstrated coding experience in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python; equivalent experience is also acceptable.

This role must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening standards. These may include specialized checks, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.

The selected candidate must pass the Microsoft Cloud background check at the time of hire or transfer and again every two years afterward.
