Role overview
This position focuses on precise tariff classification and customs compliance for import and export consignments. The work is centered on correctly identifying goods, applying the right HS codes, and helping shipments move through clearance smoothly while supporting a high standard of customer service.
Key duties
- Assign goods to the correct tariff classification in line with customs rules and internationally recognized HS codes.
- Check shipment paperwork such as invoices and packing lists to confirm the classification is accurate.
- Work with customers, freight forwarders, and internal colleagues to gather complete product details and answer classification-related questions.
- Keep up to date with customs legislation, trade arrangements, and tariff schedules so advice remains accurate and compliant.
- Spot mismatches in product classification or supporting documents, and raise or resolve them promptly with the relevant parties.
- Liaise with the Australian Border Force and other government bodies to support regulatory compliance.
- Keep detailed records connected to tariff decisions and customs clearance activity.
- Follow industry and regulatory changes closely and look for ways to improve processes.
Education and experience
A secondary school education, or an equivalent qualification, is required. Training or certification in specialized equipment or subject matter knowledge is strongly preferred.
Relevant customs clearance experience is expected, with the level depending on the role band: Level I requires 2 years, Level II requires 3 years, and Lead requires 4 years.
