Role Summary
In this position, you will support the Store Manager with the day-to-day operation of the thrift store so that service continues smoothly across all store activities. When needed, you will also step into the Sales Associate role.
Key Duties
- Deliver courteous, helpful service to customers and donors.
- Safeguard the quality and integrity of donated merchandise.
- Handle customer purchases accurately, including cash and debit transactions.
- Help support store budget goals by maintaining strong service standards.
- Open and close the store according to established procedures when assigned.
- Load, unload, sort, pack, price, and store donated materials.
- Use product knowledge to answer customer questions by phone or in person.
- Monitor store activity to help maintain security.
- Handle merchandise safely and neatly, including stock rotation.
- Support inventory control through receiving, sorting, and pricing as directed.
- Assist with store presentation, including window and merchandise displays, and keep the store tidy and visually appealing.
- Restock inventory based on supervisory direction.
- Remove items from the sales floor when instructed.
- Ensure donated goods are sorted and processed according to quality expectations.
- Keep the store organized by cleaning, sweeping, dusting, mopping, and replenishing shelves as needed.
- Follow store policies and procedures at all times.
- Assist with inventory counts and reconciliation.
- Step in as working supervisor or team lead for store associates when the Store Manager is absent.
- Train staff on store operations when required.
- Maintain a safe workplace by following health and safety rules.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- This is a permanent full-time role.
- Work takes place in a standard store setting.
- The job involves frequent physical activity, including stretching, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking, with lifting of up to 30 lbs without assistance.
- You may regularly encounter dust, fumes, and changing temperatures.
- Work must be completed within set deadlines.
- You may deal often with interpersonal conflict involving guests, donors, vendors, and staff.
- The work is varied and includes repetitive tasks at times.
Education and Experience
- Interest in learning about, and supporting, The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose in relation to the role.
- Ability to work in accordance with occupational health and safety laws and the organization’s own health and safety procedures.
- An equivalent mix of education and experience may also be considered.
- Some high school education is required.
- At least 2 years of experience in a retail store or warehouse setting.
Skills and Capabilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Comfort working collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs repeatedly without help, including pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting product.
- Good attention to detail.
- Successful completion of any required screening and background checks, as determined by The Salvation Army.
Location
This position is for the Quadra Thrift Store (new location) at 3460 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC V8X 1G6.
Compensation
The intended hiring range for this role is $18.50 to $23.13 per hour, with a maximum rate of $27.76 per hour. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
