Role overview
Made Tech is looking for an experienced designer to help shape technology that improves public services and creates better outcomes for society. The role sits within a design-led environment where user-centred design plays a central part in service delivery. You will work as part of a team delivering public services, influencing design direction, ensuring strong design quality, and taking ownership of the end-to-end design for a chosen service.
You will be an active contributor to a wider design and research community, helping build a culture of collaboration, feedback, and good design practice. The role calls for a practitioner who can manage complex design challenges, support others, and advocate for interaction and service design both inside and outside the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver practical design work for a single product or team.
- Serve as the design specialist on the team, guiding the design process and explaining design decisions to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Identify possible issues early, refine them, and develop effective solutions.
- Know when to seek extra guidance or support.
- Work with a level of independence, while accepting occasional direction or changes to implementation.
- Share ideas, methods, and feedback within communities of practice and actively seek input on your own work.
- Create fresh approaches to difficult design problems using core design principles.
- Use advanced design tools such as Figma, the GOV.UK prototyping kit, and Adobe InDesign.
- Promote interaction design and service design both internally and externally.
- Coach and support others, and help define the standards others will follow.
- Influence colleagues, clients, partners, and peers on the value of interaction and service design.
- Build broad knowledge across the business or industry.
- Ensure design work delivered by the team meets quality expectations.
- Encourage effective habits for sharing, reviewing, and improving design work.
- Occasionally contribute to hiring designers and researchers.
- Help shape Made Tech’s design principles through strong public service delivery.
- Support a positive design studio culture at Made Tech and at client sites.
- Contribute to the delivery of public services for users alongside clients.
Competencies
- Strong client orientation.
- Motivation to deliver results.
- Commitment to learning and mentoring.
- Proven professional experience.
- Strong facilitation skills.
- A practical, maker-led approach to problem solving.
Benefits
Made Tech is expanding its benefits as the team grows, and recently introduced a flexible benefits platform. This includes access to a Smart Tech scheme, a Cycle to Work scheme, and an individual benefits allowance that can be used toward either a healthcare cash plan or a pension plan. The company also offers optional social and wellbeing events for employees.
- 30 days of paid annual leave, plus bank holidays.
- Flexible working hours.
- Flexible parental leave options.
- Part-time remote working available for all staff.
- Paid counselling, along with access to financial and legal advice.
Additional information
This position requires Security Check (SC) clearance if you are successful.
