Role overview
This role sits within AWS Infrastructure Services, the group responsible for designing, planning, delivering, and running the company’s global infrastructure. The team keeps AWS data centers operating by supporting servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling systems that customers depend on every day.
The Infrastructure Operations team is central to AWS data center support and operates around the clock to maintain physical infrastructure with a focus on safety, security, availability, productivity, capacity, efficiency, and cost.
The Data Center Engineering Operations Trainee will support engineering and operations work inside an Amazon Data Center, including risk identification and mitigation, preventive and corrective maintenance of critical infrastructure, vendor coordination, and reporting of operational metrics.
This opportunity is intended for someone with little to no prior experience who is motivated to learn data center engineering operations and has a basic technical understanding of electrical or mechanical systems. The position reports to the DCEO Manager and contributes to availability, cost control, risk assessment, maintenance review, and metric tracking.
You will work with software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain professionals, security specialists, operations managers, and other teams across AWS. The environment values inclusion, bold thinking, and ownership through to completion.

This is a 6-month fixed-term position, with the possibility of converting to a permanent full-time role.
Key responsibilities
- Learn data center operations through classroom-based training and hands-on site experience.
- Support the on-site coordination of contractors, subcontractors, and vendors, ensuring work follows company procedures, established practices, and local laws.
- Track performance benchmarks, analyze operational data, and prepare reports covering critical facility infrastructure operations and maintenance.
- Create change management requests and incident management tickets for DCEO as instructed.
- Help create and maintain documentation related to business and facility operations.
- Assist with rack installation and the delivery of power and cooling within required limits.
- Participate in routine maintenance and emergency response for systems such as switchgear, generators, UPS units, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, and building monitoring systems.
- Support the design, implementation, commissioning, and expansion of new facilities.
- Help manage facility assets and infrastructure inventory as directed.
- Take part in construction and operational meetings when needed.
- Support work order compliance and review contractual service-level agreements.
- Coordinate with infrastructure operations teams on daily operational needs.
- Assist in resolving infrastructure engineering and service issues.
- Provide strong customer service and work toward customer satisfaction.
- Meet shift schedules, daily operating hours, and on-call response expectations during rotation.
Day-to-day work
- Support the onsite operations team in troubleshooting facility and rack-level events within internal service-level agreements.
- Perform rack installation, rack removal, and facility management tasks.
- Provide operational readings and key performance indicators to help maintain uptime.
- Oversee contractor, subcontractor, and vendor activity to ensure compliance with procedures, practices, and local legislation.
- Monitor maintenance and operations across electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems in the data center.
Basic qualifications
- Interest in maintaining a data center or other critical-space facility.

- Awareness of physical security protocols.

- Ability to handle a physical role, including lifting rack equipment and working in cramped or elevated spaces while following health and safety rules.
Preferred qualifications
- Degree or technical qualification, including military or trade school background, Cert IV, or similar relevant experience.
- Experience in data center engineering or operations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
