About Canyon Solar
Canyon Solar is working to speed up Australia’s shift to clean energy by turning underused car parks into solar-powered hubs. Rather than clearing new land for utility-scale solar, the company focuses on making better use of existing built spaces. These car park solutions can generate renewable electricity, support EV charging where people need it, provide shelter from the weather, and add infrastructure that is practical as well as visually appealing.
The business operates across renewable energy, manufacturing, and construction, and has created a prefabricated solar canopy system that is designed, manufactured, and installed for retail, corporate, logistics, and government customers. With a strong pipeline of major projects across Australia, the company is now seeking a Project Engineer to help deliver them.
Role Overview
In this position, you will join the delivery team and work closely with sales, development, production, and site-based teams. You will report to the Project Manager and contribute to projects from contract award through to completion, while also supporting internal capex initiatives. Projects generally run for about four months, giving you the chance to see your work progress from planning through to completion in a relatively short timeframe.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with end-to-end project delivery by helping plan, coordinate, and maintain accurate project schedules and programs from contract signing through to handover.
- Support procurement and budgeting activities, including comparing subcontractor quotations, preparing purchase orders, coordinating the movement of materials and equipment, and tracking costs and forecasts against budget and timelines.
- Coordinate interfaces across civil, electrical, and mechanical disciplines, while keeping drawings and technical documents aligned.
- Take responsibility for quality assurance documentation, including inspection and test plans (ITPs), and ensure records are completed to a high standard.
- Maintain timely and clear communication between development, production, and site teams.
- Work with site supervisors and leading hands to carry out inspections, support testing and handover activities, and help keep the work progressing safely.
- Support compliance with WHS and environmental obligations, including ensuring subcontractors submit required safety documents such as Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
- Contribute to continuous improvement by updating the improvements register, closing out actions, developing installation manuals and standards, and capturing lessons learned to improve product quality and innovation.
Work Environment
This is a practical, site-heavy position. You will spend a significant amount of time on project sites, with travel across NSW and to interstate locations as required. The ideal candidate will be based in, or willing to relocate to, the Southern Highlands so they can be closely involved with the production and site teams. Some flexibility to work remotely between site visits is available.
Ideal Candidate
The company is looking for someone who is methodical, practical, well organised, and attentive to detail. You should be able to take initiative, learn quickly, and own your responsibilities with confidence. Strong communication, teamwork, time management, and critical thinking skills are important, along with the ability to stay calm under pressure, solve problems systematically, and consistently deliver dependable work. A positive attitude and genuine interest in Canyon Solar’s mission are also valued.
Experience
Applicants should ideally bring around 3 to 5 years of experience in project engineering, construction, or another project delivery environment, preferably with some exposure to renewable energy, manufacturing, or building and construction. Candidates from other backgrounds are welcome if they can demonstrate transferable experience relevant to a project engineering role.
Essential Requirements
- A diploma, trade qualification, degree, or equivalent industry experience in engineering, construction, project management, or a related discipline. A university degree is not mandatory, and applicants with a diploma or similar background are encouraged to apply.
- Strong computer literacy, including the ability to use different software systems and quickly adapt to new ones, with solid Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel.
- A valid driver’s licence.
Desirable Experience
- Exposure to solar PV, renewable energy, electrical, or construction projects, including EPC-style delivery.
- Experience working with subcontractors and managing project documentation on site.
- Familiarity with scheduling and project management software.
- Understanding of electrical and grid-connection processes, as well as relevant Australian standards.
- A current White Card, or willingness to obtain one.
- Comfort with incorporating AI tools into day-to-day workflows.
Why Join Canyon Solar
- You’ll be contributing to a mission-driven business focused on decarbonisation through renewable energy and EV charging infrastructure.
- The company is in a fast-growing phase within an emerging market with global relevance, offering room to grow alongside the business.
- Training and professional development are supported to help expand employee capability and experience.
- The workplace culture values wellbeing, diversity, and flexibility, supporting people at different stages of life.
- The team embraces continuous improvement and adapts quickly to new opportunities, including new products, process changes, and AI adoption.
